Quarry's hope would to be able to hook inside C00*ey's hook...being Gerry's jab wasn't the best to hold Jerry off. Quarry cracks Gerry's chin early....or C00*ey wins on cuts in 7 rds (Quarry's standard problem).
Quarry should win as he had better all-around skills. Cooney would be a very much live underdog with that left hook. Cooney's best chance would be to catch Quarry within the first few rounds, although if he could hang in there through the middle rounds and remain competitive he'd still have a chance as Quarry had a tendency to wilt if the fight was not going his way. But as I see it, this is Quarry's fight to lose. All things considered, Quarry's experience should carry the day for him. I see him winning as he did against Buster Mathis, Ron Lyle, or Mac Foster. Quarry UD or mid-to-late round stoppage.
I think this is one that with the benefit of hindsight the logical choice would be Quarry, but at the time, when Cooney was "hot" and his various weaknesses had not yet been exposed by Holmes et al, Cooney would be the favourite. The question is, would Quarry be able to take advantage of Cooney's weaknesses? The problem for Quarry in a fight like this is that his strengths wouldn't in all likelihood come to the fore until he has survived Cooney's strengths, Quarry has the significant issue of surviving Cooney's early storm. Quarry has the additional problem to overcome of Cooney's sheer size, range & reach, not a problem that Quarry had with Lyle to the same degree. Adding to this that Quarry himself could be erratic and cut prone, it's not a given that he does overcome Cooney's strengths. This is a difficult fight to call imo. I tentatively go for the more proven Quarry to survive the early onslaught and beat Cooney on points.
