I honestly think that a peak Quarry takes a decision over Rahman, perhaps even stops him late. Sure, Rahman would have a bit in terms of size and perhaps strength, but Quarry was hands down the better boxer by far, and had a tremendous workrate. He outboxed a prime Lyle, who was a great counter puncher, iced Shavers in a single round, pounded an undefeated Mac Foster, and outpointed an aging yet still competitive Patterson. I think Rahman would try and take the fight to Quarry, and be met with counter punch after counter punch. Quarry would likely frustrate the hell out of him. His only chance, is if Jerry gets cut early, and Hasim could find a way to capitalize on it, but in all probability, Quarry needs to be favored here.
All though Jerry had up and down performances against some ATGs, his Boxing ability, punch, and all around Ring generalship lead to a late round knockout.
I think Quarry clobbers Rahman, stops him late in the fight. Quarry was just such a better all around fighter.
rahman impressed me exactly once...............and that was vs the limited kali meehan. that ramrod jab reminded me of sonny liston. but outside of that..........cant remember him ever fighting at that level. rahman is imo a fighter who did the best he could to not make the most of his talents. why, beats me. anyway, that rahman i could see winning. but i dont pick a fighter going on hunch. quarrey was a very good allround fighter. unless he gets cut, he outboxes rahman and maybe even stops him late. quarry had the punch to do it imo.
Quarry was generally more consistent and on one of his best nights I'd take him to wear down and take out Rahman during the later rounds. I just think he's simply the better fighter at a good deal of things.
I think it depends on what strategy Rahman adopts. If he tries to advance behind his ram-rod jab and load up that big right hand to the body and head... He'll get out-hustled and maybe even stopped by Quarry. Quarry was NOT the boxer to go on the front foot against. On the other hand, Quarry always seemed to have problems on the front foot. He looked totally useless against Ali; very few boxers looked less impressive against that version of Ali. If Rahman fought the kind of strategy he fought against Lewis in their first fight, where he worked the jab, kept moving and looked for counter-opportunities with the right hand- always avoiding a straight fire fight- I think he could win a decision over Quarry. I think this is a 50-50 fight: whoever adopts the stance of the aggressor in their footwork would probably lose.
Quarry might very well stop Rahman early like Earnie Shavers. Rahman had a good jab that could present problems and maybe open a cut, that would be Rahmans big chance to win. He does have a big right hand as well so you can't count him out. Quarry by KO though, either early or late when Rahman tires..
I think it's pretty fair to call Rahman a poor man's Ron Lyle. I don't think he would present anything Quarry hasn't already proven more than able to handle, or in any combination he hasn't already faced. Quarry by UD or late stoppage.
BIG DEE HERE= Quarry by 1st rd KO as Rahman is a duck for Quarry to sharpshoot against. Rahman had one good fight and that was one good punch to win the title. THATS ALL AS HE WOULD HAVE BEEN A SECOND CLASS HEAVYWEIGHT IN THE EARLY 70s.
