Quarry beats Rahman despite giving away a lot of size and strength. Quarry was just a better overall fighter than Rahman. I think Rahman's size, strength, and jab(if he got it going) would give Quarry some real fits. But Quarry wins by decision.
My initial instinct was to go with the majority and pick Quarry here, but then I hesitated. Although inconsistent, Ramhan has upped his game on occasion, and proved versatile. Maybe, just maybe, he can bring something more to the table than a Shavers or Lyle.
If a lesser fighter like Maskaev, with a far shakier chin than Quarry can twice stop Rahman, I'm guessing that Quarry, with his penchant for taking out successfully all but the Ali/Frazier elite, would have no trouble in either decisioning or more likely, stopping him late with an accumulation of punches.
I would especially give the younger, faster Quarry..of '68 thru ''69....the version that took apart Spencer and Mathis, an even better chance of stopping Rahman than the more mature Jerry . The same lightning counters that devastated Thad Spencer would find that less than reliable chin of Rahman. Quarry would just be too smart for the overrated Hasim Rahman. Quarry couldn't cut it vs the elite..we know who the elite was...and Rahman was not of the elite. Check out how Buster Mathis bullied and outclassed Chuvalo (even if the vid is only 1 round), and consider how the smaller, faster Quarry just took apart the big, strong and skilled Mathis.
Rahman by KO. Rahman is 2 1/2" taller, has a 10" reach advantage, and is at least 35 Lbs. heavier. Even when Rahman was 60 Lbs. heavier he did well (Tua rematch, D12... I thought Rahman won). Rahman has a good jab, good power in both hands, he's very strong (claims he could bench 500 Lbs... even if he could only do 400, that's very good). In his prime he was only stopped by big punchers (Tua, Maskaev, and Lewis). He was stopped by W. Klitschko and Povetkin when he was washed up. He was dropped by big puncher Corrie Sanders but got up and stopped Sanders in the 7th round. Tua never dropped him, he was clearly outboxing Tua, Tua hit him and hurt him after the bell. He was still hurt when he came out for the next round (he got no extra time to recover). Tua jumped on him at the start of the 10th round and the fight was stopped. I thought Rahman clearly beat Tua in their rematch but it was ruled a draw. Rahman hit Tua as the final bell rang and dropped him... did not count as a knockdown, and shouldn't, but still impressive. Vs. Maskaev, he was clearly outboxing Maskaev going into the 8th round. In the 8th Maskaev hurt Rahman and Rahman went thru the loose ropes. Rahman fell over a table and hit his head on the floor. He had 20 seconds to get in the ring but didn't make it. In their rematch Rahman was ahead going into the final round but Maskaev was able to stop him. Vs. Lewis a very determined Rahman became only the 2nd man (and the last man) to defeat Lewis. Lewis stopped Rahman in the rematch, no shame. He did well vs. Holyfield but lost a TD when the fight was stopped after 8 rounds. Rahman looked like he was growing another head after a brutal headbutt by Holyfield. Holyfield did a little more but Rahman performed well. Rahman got lazy later in his career and had some disappointing performances. He lost a very close decision to Ruiz in a dull fight. Ruiz fights usually were dull. He won a close decision over Al Cole when he should have been able to beat Cole with ease. He drew with Toney and their rematch was ruled a NC... Rahman really didn't look his best in either fight. Rahman stopped Lewis in the 5th, Corrie Sanders in the 7th, Kali Meehan in the 5th, clearly outboxed Obed Sullivan (when he was good) and Monte Barrett over 12, drew with Tua, drew with James Toney, lost a close fight with former World Champ Holyfield. Back to the fight with Quarry... Yes, Quarry beat guys who were bigger than himself but those guys were not big and skilled like Rahman. None of those guys could have knocked out Lewis or even Sanders. They couldn't have fought to draws with Tua or Toney. They wouldn't have been able to fight Holyfield without getting stopped. They couldn't have even outboxed Barrett. Rahman by KO!
i pick quarry by decision but rahman was a very very strong guy, he dropped tua... this guy could bang, he could finish a fight against anyone with a good shot
Quarry would tko Rahman with surprising ease. Speed bothered Quarry more than anything and Rahman would be slower than Quarry. Rahman's boxing skills were actually quite basic, while Quarry had an excellent amateur background to go with with his extended pro experience.
Not sure why you say "Rahman wouldn't even be ALLOWED to fight Quarry most of the time" or even what you mean by that. Quarry would have been able to take Rahman's best punch and would have boxed circles around Rahman, beating him from pillar to post.
