The Cutie vs.the Counter Puncher. Jimmy Young, with quick Hands, quicker Feet, very good Boxing skills, and a safety first approach to boxing.Jerry Quarry, good Boxer with average speed, very good counter Puncher, very good Left Hook, and a propensity to Cut.I see Quarry initiating most if not all of the action, perhaps being Cut,with Young not able to take advantage because of his Timid style.Quarry 15rd. U.D.
It has been said that Quarry used Young as sparring partner early in Young's career and that Jerry dominated these. Although what happened in sparring is not always a good barometer of what would happen in a real match. Still though I think Quarry would easily beat guys like Young and Joe Bugner. Quarry by fairly easy decision. Young would not be troublesome for Quarry as he was for guys like Foreman and Lyle. Quarry had better handspped than those guys.
True.Quarry was quicker of foot AND hand than Foreman or Lyle.Better Boxer too.Quarry would also attack at different angles when fighting a Man like Young, not merely stalk.
Quarry v Ellis was a particularly boring and uneventful match, so I wouldn't expect too much from Quarry v Young.
Guess I'll be the Devil's Advocate here. They were both counter-punchers so this one could develop into a real snooze-fest. At least Ellis always came out the early aggressor. In retrospect over the years, I've come to regard Quarry's punching power as a tad overrated. Solid and stiff but not mind-numbing, at least not against upper-tier contenders so stopping a prime Young seems virtually impossible IMO. Also Quarry always had trouble with slick boxers and Jimmy oozed "slickness" in spades... Young UD....
This is how I feel; look at Quarry's results against Machen, Ellis and Ali. I think Young would probably be a bad match-up for him.
I agree with your points, however,Young as I've stated previously was an overly cautious Fighter, seemingly not wanting to press the advantage even when he had one,not enough aggresion.Where as Quarry boxes well enough, could punch some and was a good finisher when his Man was in trouble.
I think Young had the ability to move and cover enough to keep him out of harms way for the most part but Jerry went to the body good and if he could keep a sustained attack, Jimmy may drop his guard but i give Jimmy the edge in a SD win
