Quarry was really pissed at being caught like that and decked...he used his anger very effectively to get one of his most emphatic and picturesque ko's.

IMHO this shows that the Quarry-Shavers fight just a few months earlier was a bit of a fluke. In Feb 73 Jerry was chiseled against Lyle. In Dec 73 he looked like a human pear against, granted, a rather green Earnie. A journeyman Alexander totally 'clocked' him. The rematch with Frazier in June 74 was, in retrospect, over before it started.

This was the period of time when they wanted to throw Quarry in with Foreman...I think we know what that result would have been.

Foreman went on to fight Ali.......leaving Quarry to lose to Frazier in June, 74.

tell you what..quarry was a little lucky it came at the end of the round, cause he was very unsteady and could have been in danger of getting stopped.

alexanders previous fight to this was a 1st round ko win....and so were his next 3 after this !!

As much as I liked Jerry, I shudder to think of what would have happened vs Foreman.

Foreman did to. Thats why he wouldnt even spar with Quarry in Cali.

Why was his KO over Shavers a fluke? Shavers was stopped by Stander who wasnt Quarry's class. Stopped by Lyle who lost to Quarry in pretty one sided fashion. Dropped and outpointed by Stallings who wasnt in Quarry's class.

Short of a faded Norton and faded Ellis and a very green, pre prime Young I fail to see who Shavers beat that acquired him the reputation he has now. Talk about a one trick pony.

I was there and I must say Alexander landed that shot and I saw sparks fly off Jerry's ass Joe Alexander was a puncher, despite not going far in his career but to Jerry's credit he got up and KO'd Joe...I remember taking my girlfriend to that fight 36 years ago and it was a great fight live.

Joe Alexander was a 5"9 Heavyweight who KO'd the 6"4 Jose Garcia (who KO'd Ken Norton)in 1 rd. and that was 2 years before Norton rematched Garcia

I think Alexander was a good prospect who could punch just not moved right, to Quarry credit he had a strong chin and got up to win but Alexander may have had success if his luck of the draw was another contender at the time. Joe A also beat GG Maldonado before GG's stop of Nick Wells

Joe Alexander was coming off a 1st rd KO win over Garcia and had 3 more in a row after the Quarry fight, if Jerry did not make it out of the 1st it would have been 5 1st rd KO's for J.A.

Gil Clancy had Quarry training on Long island for this fight. Clancy had a huge white tent set-up on the property adjacent to the famed and now defunct John Peel room which was attached to the Island Inn in Westbury ,Long Island.(10 mins. from Nassau Coliseum).
For $3 or $4 you could go and see Jerry train for a afternoon session in the tent. He averaged 150-200 people a day in prep. for this fight.
Unforturnately I could not not remember his sparring partners names.
