who wins????.............honestly i think bugner would outpoint quarry....in a god afwull fight:smoke:smoke:smoke
Interesting match up. Some beleive ( not me ) that Bugner was better than Quarry and use the Frazier and Ali fights as examples. I don't think Bugner was better than Quarry, but I do think he fought a lot smarter. Bugner has a quality resume from top to bottom. He is somewhat forgotten these days.
I've always refused to use a loss or losses as a way of making a point about how good a fighter is. Bugner had God-given talent, good jaw, and the heart of a thumb tack! Bugner might outbox Quarry; I agree that Jerry was clearly the better fighter but IMO he could only stun Bugner at best and had trouble against big 'boxers'. I could see a Bugner dec. in a boring scrap. What hurts the counter-punching Quarry here is facing someone who wouldn't come at him.
Quarry by dec Bugner has the ability to frustrate and outpoint Jerry but not the heart,Quarry would get to him late and slow him to a walk with body shots Bugner was durable but flurrying with the jab would not be enough to win this one, imo.
Well said. Bugner had a safety first type of style with solid skills and good size. Quarry would want to get into exchanges, but that is simply not the way Bugner fought. The interesting thing about Bugner is those in boxing didn't refer to him as a white hope like Bobbick or Quarry. Perhaps that is because he wasn't American. Has anyone seen Bugner vs Ali? If so, how close was it?
Both the fights with Bugner were competitive ,but not close, the second one which was for nthe title was Alis 3rd defence in 4 months, and at times he looked a little weary, the humidity in Kuala Lumpur was bad ,but Bugner definitely didnt rise to the occasion.Mickey Duff in his autobiography recounts how dissapointed he was by Bugners effort ,and his reaction to his defeat, swimming in the hotel pool after the fight and sipping champagne.Bugner sensing Duff was downcast said to him" whats up Mickey ,you look a bit down",Duff not wanting a row said ,"well Joe I suppose at the end of the day its all about the money",Bugner replied ,"yes and being able to count it"BUgner isnt American,he isnt English either being born in Hungary though I think he has US citizen ship now. The fight was pretty pedestrian due to the heat ,Ali tired around the 11th but dredged up his last reserves to win the last couple of rounds to win clearly over the unambitious Bugner
Good summary. Why Bugner seemed lackluster is odd. If Bugner was all about the money he had to know beating Ali would entitle him to a much bigger pay day on the horizon. Is there any chance Bugner tanked the fight?
I dont think he tanked it ,he just didnt have the balls to really go for it,Ali was33,and at 225 ,12 bls over his best weight to Bugners 230,Bugner just didnt have it in him to commit to an all out war,.The only time I saw Bugner look really like he was prepared to go for it was against Frazier, and Ive allways thought that was because Smokin Joe was at him for the whole fight ,Bugner had to fight to survive, rather like Hearns against Hagler,Bugner had the talent to make a splash and the size ,I sat next to him at the fight s once ,he really is a big boy!He just didnt have the fire in his belly
I can honestly see Bugner winning this one. Quarry didn't like looking for his opponents, and Bugner certainly didn't look very hard for his. Not only does Bugner have a stylistic edge (and the better performances vs. similar opponents), but he also in my opinion would be too durable for Quarry to stop. Bugner also has a big reach advantage and the ability to tie Quarry up on the inside. The big question mark, of course, is Bugner's heart. Would he be able to put himself at risk in order to win over the judges? Would a safety-first style win the fight on the cards against Quarry's aggression? I personally doubt it, but I wouldn't totally rule out a Bugner upset. I think Quarry would outwork Bugner, looking foolish in the process but winning the fight simply on the basis that he was doing something.
Bugner went the route with Frazier ,while Quarry did not ,but the Frazier Quarry fought was not the slightly ring worn version Bugner lost to,Quarry kod Bodell in 1 London in 2 dec Lyle in 12 kod Shavers in 1and stopped FOster ,Bugner beat London ,an old London in 5 Lost in 15 to bodell beat Foster in10 ,so I think Quarry ,s record against common opponents is better those that Bugner beat were past their sell date like ellis who decisioned Quarry ,he was shot when Bugner beat him
I notice you didn't mention the Ali fights, although I do admit that I didn't realise they even had so many common opponents. I'm not really a fan of either boxer (although I do enjoy Quarry's commentary from the 1970s).
I thought |I covered the Ali fights quite adequately in my original posts ,at least Quarry was trying to win in his two. Bugners common opponents with Quarry were for the most part ,not only over the hill but halfway up the other side when he faced them.
