You all just don't get it... DURABILITY! It's a hell of a thing. Quarry may have been more "technical" than Oscar Bonavena (who wasn't) but he damn sure wasn't as durable. What good are you if you can't finish? Like I said, chin and heart have nothing to do with it... if you get stopped for whatever reason... and if it happens in almost all of your "big fights", maybe you're not so durable. Bonavena went 58-9-1 (44) overall and was stopped just once in 68 pro fights... with 57 seconds left in the 15th round vs. Ali (3 knockdown rule). Quarry was stopped 6 times... Ali x2, Frazier x2, Norton, and Chuvalo. He lost a lop-sided decision to a still very good Zora Folley early in his career. Quarry lost a lop-sided decision to a past prime Eddie Machen early in his career. He dropped and outboxed a very good Gregoria Peralta over 10 rounds. He won a close decision over Chuvalo. Chuvalo stopped Quarry. He dropped Joe Frazier twice and lost by SD over 10 rounds. In the rematch Frazier won by 15 round decision. Frazier stopped Quarry in the 7th round and the 5th round. He dropped Karl Mildenberger 4 times and outboxed him over 12 rounds. He was dropped by Jimmy Ellis and lost by close decision over 12 rounds. Quarry also lost a decision to Ellis. He beat Zora Folley by decision in their rematch, WMD10. He outboxed Leotis Martin over 10 rounds. He won 5 or 6 rounds vs. Ali but was stopped in the 15th round. Ali stopped Quarry in the 3rd round and the 7th round. He dropped Floyd Patterson but lost by close decision after 10 rounds. Quarry drew with Patterson and won a close decision vs. him. Patterson dropped Quarry and Quarry dropped Patterson. He lost a close decision vs. Ron Lyle in 1974. Bonavena was past prime. He won every round vs. Larry Middleton. Quarry also won a decision vs. Middleton. Bonavena vs. Quarry? You guessed it... I'll take Bonavena by decision.
Yes, but ETM posted this... In Ali`s 2nd return bout against Bonevena Ali was taken to the wire and Oscar wasnt the fighter Quarry was. I feel that Bonavena was.
Ali was way ahead when he stopped Bonevena. Tough fight in spots.....sure but then again Oscar was a top contender. Bonevena best win was probably Chuvalo.....Oscar also fell short against the best competition. If Oscar can turn this into a sloppy fight yes I can see him winning. If this is the best Quarry he had the skills to beat Bonevena.
Although I liked both fighters, Chuvalo (sans the Quarry anamoly) and Bonavena had ZERO quality wins.
I originally said that Ali was fortunate that he cut Quarry that night. Ali didnt have the stamina and the legs that had before and that he would regain to a point later. Its called ring rust. Had that fight gone into the mid to late rounds Ali would have been in for quite a problem. As far as Bonavena he was strong and he had an awkward style that may have benefited him against Ali but the truth is Ali looked awful that night. His timing was off his legs were not there, he was winded and that was his second fight back. Quarry would have whipped Bonavena 6 ways to Sunday.
Funny how everyone seems to go by how many rounds someone could go in a loss to the great one's- "safety first Bugner!" prime for prime would never have beat an upper Class Quarry, Joe never beat an American who was ranked in the top 10, Quarry was in the top 5! Oh hey Bug was fighting for the British Title at age 21-Quarry was splashing down in LA, for the "world title" at the same age, glad everyone says Bugner and Bonavena went more rounds with Ali and Frazier, Alright this brings us to Common Opponent right? Bugner sports an 6-7 record vs Quarry Foes, (AND 2 KNOCKOUTS!!)-While Jerr is 13-5-1 with 7 Knockouts vs Bug's opponents, there it is there, I'll go out and Say Quarry KO 8, He defeated a lot better fighter's than Bugner during his Hof Career!
I agree Quarry would win. Not convinced on it being by knockout or stoppage. Joe had the tendency to linger around against the best of them, and Jerry was not exactly a knockout artist.
I started taking boxing lessons for fun at 37 years of age in a small town called Highland Park, IL. I only spar with headgear but have never actually had any fights and never will. The street its located on is called Skokie Blvd. So maybe one day i'll be in the Skokie blvd hall of fame
Ali was definitely ahead prior to the stoppage in the Bonavena bout :good Tough fight,as you say,but Ali was clearly ahead.
Good luck with that, I'm still trying to make the Hall Of Fame of my family... my 75 year old Dad still ranks ahead of me :yep
It's not about just lasting longer, it's about how well they did vs. the greats. I'm not just comparing common opponents here... I'm looking at how they did vs. a certain level of fighter.
