Jerry Quarry vs. Max Baer

I don’t think Quarry is over-rated personally but I would certainly say Baer, probably his own fault, is under-estimated.

 

While I agree with that, it does not necessarily follow that Jerry Quarry wins. I think the best version of Max Baer vs. the best version of Jerry Quarry results in Jerry Quarry looking good early and Max Baer coming on later to win the fight.

 

I wish they would have fought again
I believe Schmeling would have won a rematch

Highly plausible , 15 rounds is a long time with Max and I can't see Quarry really hurting Baer.

 

Schmeling was lucky he didn't get killed in that fight. He took a horrible beating. Amazing he recovered and beat Louis three years later.

And Schmeling still lived to be 99 years old. Despite all the punishment he took in the ring.

Schmeling looked flat to me. This is Baers most impressive performance for me although extremely dirty. I don't think Baer could come in prepared like that again. He never did.

 

I think you're exactly right.This was the fight in which Baer showed once and for all how great he could be, if only he cared enough. And yes, he was so dirty and disrespectful to Schmeling that only under the circumstances of Hitler coming to power in Germany could he be halfway excused for his conduct.

 

It's is notable that Schmeling is one of the very few fights Baer was motivated for, because he considered himself Jewish-ish.

I am going to make the same observation I always make--we rarely saw the best of Baer because he hated fighting after killing a man in the ring. Quarry wins this 10 our of 10 times...unless the beast who fought Schmeling and Galento shows up!

 

Odd fight because both men had very good chins and while both men could wallop the strong chins may nullify the power and turn this into a stylistic fight.

Assuming both men were prime it could be a decision and who hustles in a close fight.

 

Baer pathetic vs Louis very mediocre vs Braddock hurt his rep. If he had Marciano’s heart and dedication to training he would have been a very good maybe great fighter in his day. But he wasn’t. He could have great performances and then mentioned horrible ones. I say he was a taller more athletic Chuvalo without his heart. Therefore he would have had a good punchers chance vs Quarry. The best Quarry wins 7 out of 10 times. The Quarry vs Chuvalo gets ko d first time in his career.
