It never panned out when they were both in the heavyweight picture for some reason or another... but scheduled for 12 rounds, who ya got?
Yeah, Quarry by decision. As long as he doesn't get caught like he did against Bonavena. I'd favor a Young, Prime Quarry to defeat Bonavena. He should be able to outbox him and beat him to the punch.
This would be a great matchup. Im on the fence as to a winner but could see scenarios favoring both. Two of my favorites. I recently acquired a ton of rare bonavena footage and the thing I've learned is that he fought up or down to the level of opponent he was with. He could struggle or win unimoressively against a journeyman and than give a lgend he'll. I think quarry was the more polished of the two but bonavena brought a lot to the table that could offset quarrys talent.
What kind of footage did you aquire? could you possibly upload it on WBVA? I'd be very much interested
Some of it is already up. Its clips mostly. Im trying to track down his first few fights in nyc but I don't know if they were filmed.
Awkward fighter Bonavena and strong...Quarry could box and punch...Oscar was a strongman...I think Jerry was the better skilled but this one may get ugly Oscar was 5"10 and Quarry was listed at 6" even could be some head bumping, cuts and Rhythm breaking I give Jerry the nod
Yeah, this one would be more interestin g thank many think. Not an open and shut win for Quarry..Bonavena would make it awfully uncomfortable for Jerry..though Quarry would have most likely have copped a decision...like Bummy said, this one could have gotten ugly.
Yeah, remember Quarry found it hard to resist a war and sometimes lacked the discipline to carry out a game-plan eg he fought Frazier and boxed Ellis. In a war I fancy Oscar, both boxing to their potential, Jerry.
I think I told you how hard I busted my arse to get the Denver TV stations to exhume the Lyle-Bonavena fight. They want money money money....
