Quarry was the better fighter, but a lot of guys inferior in skills could beat him just on cuts unfortunately. Man ronnyrains, you can keep a thread going.

i just watched them both at their best, it would be a major upset Bonavena beat Quarry , THE BEST COUNTER PUNCHER IN THE WORLD AT HIS BEST. I seen Bonavena against ali, he's worse than Chuvalo, very clumsey, Bugner 1973 vs Ali looked better than Bonavena.

Jerry was stopped by 4 guys . only Ali, Frazier & Norton beat him on cuts, thats not fighter's below Quarry's skills!

Quarry was the better technician but Bonavena had insane durability and his awkwardness posed problems for the best of them. Oscar usually lost to the elite heavyweights, but he gave them trouble and few looked good in defeating him in hard fights. When Quarry was 'on', he could produce a brilliant performance. But often if a fight was not going his way he would wilt and become frustrated. I am inclined to think that would happen if he had fought Bonavena and he would drop a decision. But those early rounds would be interesting! It is unfortunate that they never met, especially as each fought just about every other top contender.

Bonavena never knocked out a ranked opponent or out boxed a ranked opponent , Jerry beat 9 and knocked out 5

Bonavena would have as much chance of winning a decision vs the Irishman , AS RICHARD GOSHA!

Pfff, Ronnyrains is so far up Quarry's ass its ridiculous comparing Bonavena to Dick Gosha... The same Bonavena who gave Ali hell for 15 rounds?? You know, the same Ali that Quarry couldnt make it past 7 against?? The same Bonavena that went 25 rounds with Joe Frazier dropping him twice?? The same Joe Frazier Quarry got the **** kicked out of him by on three seperate occasions if you include the sparring session in the Main St Gym where Quarry got his teeth knocked through his lip and had to quit in tears?? The same Bonavena who beat George Chuvalo?? The same Chuvalo that knocked out Jerry Quarry?? You are comparing him to a 10-10-0 clubfighter who turned pro at LHW and had lost his last two fights when Jerry went the distance with him... Ok. Are we all invited to the wedding when you dig up Jerry's corpse and force it to marry you?

Quarry gets a walk forward short guy coming to him without the names "Joe" or "Frazier " ? Jerry would have hammered little Ringo.

Jerry would control this. Quarry too quick and threw better combinations. Bonavena didn't have as good of coordination. Quarry hit just as hard, both had tough necks. Oscar would need tl cut Jerry to beat him. Its possible but wasnt a guy with a jab. Plus Quarry would lay the wood to this dude. Soon hed have Oscar looking to survive like he did against Frazier.

Jerry was more talented, Oscar was tough and durable. Barring cuts, Jerry on points in a good battle.

Quarry was my hero as a young kid but like with Marciano what was reality is what it is. Doesn’t mean I love those guys any less. Quarry failed badly against Ali and Frazier but Bonavena stood his ground against them. Chuvalo and Ellis I think are the big fights I think Quarry could have won that he didn’t. Chuvalo had he got up at 9 instead of 10 he probably lasts the distance and gets the decision. Ellis was a little more difficult the Ellis at that point mid 1968 was a very good heavyweight for that period. But a better strategy and being better prepared Quarry may have won.
Hate to say it but based on reality Bonavena was more durable and Quarry did tend to get frustrated and give up like he did 2nd fight Frazier and Ali. I’m going to say Quarry is beating him early looking good but tires middle rounds like he would and Bonavenas greater weight strength and grit takes it toll. Draw or anyone’s win. It’s a pickem. Quarry could certainly win and could certainly lose.
