Mercer has a good shot at cutting and stopping Quarry with that awesome power jab of his, but my bet would be on Jerry. A straight-forward slugger with a poor defence and no lateral movement is going to take serious hurt from a tough counter-puncher like Quarry. Jerry Quarry by UD in a great war. It would be like Shavers-Quarry, for 12 rounds, with no knockdowns.
Barring Jerry getting cut,he'd shut Mercer out over the distance. Providing he kept his cool, and utilised his very good counterpunching skills.
Quarry would win in the same fashion as he did against another late starter in the game, Ron Lyle. Just too much experience and craft.
If the best of both guys show up it's a very competitive fight .. maybe Quarry has an edge .... very close ...
Depends which Mercer shows up, I'd likely go with Quarry, but the Mercer who gave Lennox and Holyfield close fights, I don't know. Mercer certainly had a better defense and jab than Lyle
A one sided decision, ala Ron Lyle. Quuarry would turn boxer for this one...and forget about Mercer doing to him what he did to Tommy Morrison..Jerry's chin was far superior.
Jerry hands out a boxing lesson. With respect to the Lyle analogy, JQ was faded. The version who dominated Mathis over 12 does similarly school any version of Ray, however.
