Oh, I would make Quarry a live underdog. I never thought that highly of Bowe. He is remembered because he and Holyfield, another very imperfect fighter, meshed so well in style and temperament to create wildly entertaining fights, much like Gatti and Ward (though Holy is a step above that either). The extremely limited and not very powerful Coetzer gave Bowe issues by not folding per the script and Bowe chose to get dirty which the ref allowed. I could see Quarry, who was quite skilled with good pop, doing a notch or two better.

How come I don't ever hear you complain about Frank Bruno?
Homework assignment: rewatch Bruno Vs Coetzer.
Observe the dirty tactics Frank resorted to. There's no comparison to the Bowe fight. Absolutely none.

Homework assignment: Start a thread about Frank Bruno if he interests you so much.

    He never much interested me.

    That's weasel talk.

Homework Assignment: Read the title of the thread and point out where Bruno's name is.

Bonus Question: Point out where Wlad Klitschko's name is.

Ultimately a massacre. Bowe proves Quarry is overmatched within 2 rounds, after that a ferocious beating until stopped, probably before 4.

I think Quarry lands some solid shots and makes it a fun fight--hell Herbie Hide did. But ultimately Bowe walks him down, beats him down, and the ref saves Quarry after a few knockdowns and a heavy barrage.

What makes you not rate Holyfield that highly?

I do rate him fairly highly, not top ten, but top 15.

Riddick Bowe probably wins by stoppage. I know Jerry Quarry generally did well against bigger come forward fighters with limited defense. But in this case he won’t be able to keep Bowe off him all night with just counterpunches. And Bowe was way too big and durable for Jerry to dispatch him like he did to shavers

Fair enough; I should have asked it differently. Could you elaborate on what you mean when you say Holyfield was a very imperfect fighter?

Quarry liked to surprise the bigger guys, albeit not as big as Bowe but he could hang with guys around the 220lbs mark fine, I don’t think Bowe hit as hard as Foster, Lyle and Shavers but his size at 235lbs I think it absolutely matters here, he won’t budge against the 195lbs (roughly?) Quarry, taking shots from someone that small on your guard won’t do much, moving him around the ring on the inside will be easy work, negotiations will be limited for Jerry however I DO think Quarry could hurt Bowe badly - I’d say Mr Quarry would also probably be better then everyone not named Holyfield on Bowe’s record - do you think there is a scenario where Jerry could take a tight decision win over RB? To play devils advocate.

I wanna  he ate jabs like he was at a buffet, watch him step in and then back out into punching range against Bowe in even the 2nd fight… “pop” “pop” “pop” as he got bigger he sort of discarded what made him an effective heavyweight take a look against Cyzz (spelling?) just winging punches, trying to get him out of there… against Cooper, against Bowe against Foreman and Holmes he did everything he wasn’t supposed to do - he still won… Holmes was old, Foreman was old but technically speaking? He followed Larry to the ropes and just poured it on doing little to no damage, he did so badly the vast vast majority of folks think Holmes would put a shut out on him if he wasn’t ancient I THOUGHT HOLMES WON - Foreman? Morrison shut him down completely, Stewart made him into a gargoyle - Evander has displayed the skills to beat GF way easier in the past but instead he decided to try and tee off on him every chance he got? Didn’t hurt him half the time, just punched him up with little set up - Cooper, he opened himself up for that, again he didn’t need to at all you can watch him at his heights, instead he gets into pointless shoot outs - Holyfield can follow a plan and in a fictional setting like here, he beats a lot of guys, in the real world he might even blunder against a Young, Quarry, Zhang or Brewster despite the fact he “should” beat them.
Holyfield ALSO punched with his arms, the combos would start rolling and instead of hurting guys he’d just get there heads moving like a bobble head I’m sure it wasn’t nice but he just couldn’t really punch beyond single shots, If he’d taken the time to learn he’d have taken far less damage through his career.

He didn't always fight with a high IQ. He would push all his chips into the center of the table when he didn't have the cards in his hand. It made for exciting fights but was not the best strategy. He lacked high end power while also lacking high end out-boxing skill. And I'm being harsh here. He is still one of the 15 or so greatest heavyweights the sport has ever seen.
