Jerry Quarry vs Rocky Marciano, primes

Jerry would do very well against Marciano. Until he gets sucked into a brawl,and Rocky stops him in the latter stages.

 

Would be a good fight.

But Quarry failed against the best in his own era and I don't see this changing too much regardless of what era he was in. Marciano within 10 as Quarry gets slowed down.

 

This would be attrition, and Jerry would get ground down and halted. If he was at his smartest, he could move and counter for a while, but relentless pressure and consistent power would take a toll. Frazier brought him to a knee with a hook to the body in their rematch, and Chuvalo was able to floor him with a single shot. Records indicate Jerry was dropped by Roy Crear, Memphis Al Jones 2X, Patterson, Chuvalo, Brassell (just after the bell ending round one), Joe Alexander and Frazier. Jerry could take a hell of a shot, as he demonstrated with Lyle, Shavers and Mac Foster. Yet, in 66 career outings, he sustained as many official knockdowns as the supposedly china chinned Shavers did in 90. At some point, Rocky would bring him down.

Oh, I'm sure some local station filmed it at the time, but whether its been remastered and available to the public is beyond me...

Quarry had to compete against bigger men than Rocky did. Ali, Lyle, Norton, Frazier Foster and Shavers were truly big HW's and certainly more rugged than the likes of Matthews, Cockell, Layne and Savold. Put Rocky in Quarry's place in the 70's and you certainly wouldn't see a 49-0 record. And Quarry could punch. Maybe not as hard as Rocky for one shot power but he could lay some serious hurt with both hands and his hands were faster than Rocky's. I stated in an earlier post that I would favor Marciano in this matchup and I still do but I think we need to put a little perspective on the situation. Sometimes we let nostalgia cloud our better judgement and I'm as guilty of this as anyone. Rocky more than likely wins this but it wouldn't be easy. Not by a longshot.

I love Marciano and his tale... I also like seeing the '99 film with Jon Favreau as "The Rock." I own the tape from Showtime...

LOOK! From 1887 to 1960 I would rate Rocky M. in the top-5 on the ATG heavyweight list, but if factoring in the champs from POST 1960 up until here in the present, I'm sorry to say Rocky M. only cracks my top-12 at best... Maybe its actually top-15 since I rate Wladimr Klit in at # 13...

I don't think prime Rocky M. can beat dude's like: "Ali, Holmes, Johnson, Louis, Lewis, Foreman, V.K., Holy, Tyson or Liston" in a time machine and all peak factors intact...

Jerry hangs tough for about 6-7 rds then Rocky closes the show.

 

I think it looks like the Frazier fights, really.

Quarry has a bit of success in the first round or two, as he's the slicker, faster guy, but the more and more Rocky gets in at him, the more damage will accumulate, Quarry's face falls apart, so does his composure, and he gets stopped around the 8th.
