Prime Jerry vs prime Rocky. Both guys south of 200 pounds...seems like an interesting matchup. Thoughts? p.s. My apologies if this has been already done, but I did a search and didn't find anything.
Interesting match-up. Quarry would probably fare somewhat better than he did against Frazier, since Marciano didn't quite apply as much pressure and would give Jerry a little more room for his punches. I feel that Rocky's superior power would eventually make the difference, though. Jerry is stopped on cuts somewhere in the middle rounds, but then Marciano's face is a bit marked as well.
Quarry drops him for a 2 or 3 count early on, and then Marciano just beats him down for a mid through late stoppage. Marciano isn't going to tire ala' Foster. He's not a plodding big puncher Quarry can just counter.
Jerry wore down badly in both fights with Frazier and in the Ali rematch. Marciano is a very bad matchup for him. If he goes after Rocky as he did Smoke in their title fight, he'd expend himself fairly quickly. If he tried countering Rock, he might get killed. The best he could do would be to use his mobility, and quickness from that narrow base of his, to outbox Marciano. At his very smartest, he might spring a surprise over ten rounds, but I wouldn't put money on it. Matthews had some early success in his brief match with Rocky, and so did LaStarza in their ten rounder (before Marciano was fully evolved however). In Marciano/Charles I, Ezz kept it off the ropes, in mid ring, giving ground slowly. The challenge really presented here is how Jerry Quarry might best be able to compete with Rocky. It's just too easy to say Marciano would stop Jerry.
Jerry could compete with marciano if like you said he tries to box marciano and stick and move, but thats his best bet.
I'd agree, Marciano is better defensively than Frazier and had more of a diverse arsenal to trouble Quarry with. Marciano is better in nearly every way, Quarry may have more speed but Im not sure, but marciano has the timing to take that away. Marciano is the stronger far bigger hitter
I read that Marciano really liked Jerry Quarry mentioned him as one of his favorite prospects before his death
My guess is that Marciano beats Quarry down in about ten or 11 rounds. Jerry would have his moments in the early and mid-rounds, but Marciano's pressure would be unstoppable. By the seventh or eighth round Quarry would be on the losing side of the bout and he would soak up punishment until the end.
The young version of Quarry was a good boxer....then he started trying to slug it out with everybody. He might make 10 rounds as the boxer, but the slugger Quarry version takes too much punishment and gets TKO'ed in 8rds, though he will land his share of big punches too.
Quarry had a solid chin and it would be a good fight from 1-5 rds, however Rocky hit harder, was faster, and increased his pace as the fight wore on, I could see Jerry getting hit and going down but just getting caught in a wirlwind (Moore) and getting stopped by 6-9
Quarry was fairly competitive against a prime Joe Frazier during the early rounds, so to say that Rocky would stop him early might not be the prediction to make. In fact, Jerry did fairly well against a lot of infighters. The key for me here, is Marciano's toughness and persistance, along with Quarry's tendency to get broken down as time went on. I see Rocky beating Jerry down, but it would be a good fight for as long as it lasted.
I see the Rock getting knocked down, maybe cutting a bit, but I ultimately see him taking Quarry out around Round 7 or 8. Especially if it turned into a punch-out between the two.
Very interesting fight to say the least. A prime Quarry would be one of the best opponents Rocky ever fought. Both could bang but Rocky has the edge in power. Chins are about equal. Yes equal! Quarry took some flush shots from Earnie Shavers in thier match and did'nt budge and Shavers hit every bit as hard as Marciano. He also traded punch for punch against a prime Frazier in '69 and was never taken off his feet though the bout was stopped due to cuts so let's not say that Jerry's chin was inferior to Rocky's. Jerry's hands were faster and he threw more combinations than Rocky. Both were susceptible to cuts and were close in size. Jerry holds the edge in competition having fought Ali twice and Frazier twice and his pedigree is superior in the amateurs so this fight isn't as cut and dry as many would like to believe. With that being said I still favor Marciano slightly in this one due to his durability and stamina. Jerry tended to fade in tough battles while Rocky did'nt which turns the tide in Rocky's direction IMO. One thing is certain though, this would be one hell of a fight for however long it lasts but the most likely outcome would be a late stoppage for Marciano after some early fireworks from both men.
