This could go either way, Briggs could well crush Quarry with his ton of bricks power he had/has, Quarry can hurt Briggs himself but no he wasnt a big puncher. Quarry can also outwork/outbox Briggs to a decision but Briggs carries his power late as we saw against Lykovich
Does this mean that Briggs would go on a rampage in the 1970's heavyweight division, considering that Quarry was pretty much the gatekeeper to the Ali, Frazier, Foreman level fighters and beat everyone else, including Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Thad Spencer, Buster Mathis, Mac Foster and others. We are talking about a guy who lost to Sedreck Fields after all. Briggs looks the part, but how come he only has one single win over a top 10 ranked contender in his whole record? He wasn't a top man in today's era and he wouldn't be a top man in the 70's. He would be lower top 10 at most, stringing together some knockouts, much like Mac Foster, Jeff Merrit, Blue Lewis, and fade away equally as quickly when facing top class competition, which Quarry represents. You like to say that people are overrating Quarry, but it's just you who is underrating him grossly, simple as that. He was top 5 in one of the better heavyweight eras and beat several devastating punchers. Looks like he is defined by his losses to Ali and Frazier to you though.
Mac Foster fight all over again...except Briggs gasses even quicker. Just another big lug for Quarry to take apart.
nah thats unfair. guy is a big dude, very athletic....(asthma outstanding), very heavy handed and very fast hands. i think your are doing a massive disservice to him not being a a name. hard to tell with any other fighter from the 'nowadays' term also he was a good amateur in the last few years of amateurs actually being of any use to a professional. he would of been a mild contender would of been a name at least. ......but yeah quarry after some rounds of inactivity times Shannon's left hand with a right cross. then just out does him in everything. ending with briggs on his haunches hanging on to the ropes. quarry is the quintessential giant slayer and i think adds another giant to his list
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6xldahJECQ[/ame] Briggs showed he could be very dangerous early against a Peak Lewis, before badly gassing. Briggs might get a KO or TKO in the initial 4 rounds, but after that it's all Quarry. Jerry did demonstrate great durability in '69 against a Peak Frazier, so I think i'll give the edge to Quarry & say he survives being hurt early, to take a decision or late TKO.
quarry in the mid rounds, i agree with the posters saying he is overated on this forum. I even saw a thread claiming he would knock out tyson?? but that still doesnt mean he wasnt very good, and far better than briggs ever was or ever will be.
I think Lyle would have beat Quarry in a rematch but whatever. Nah, Quarry was better than Briggs (as I stated earlier.... I even picked Quarry to win a decision), but he wasn't that much better IMO. I could see Briggs stopping him with pucnhes or on cuts. I could see Quarry winning a close decision. I don't see Quarry stopping him.
