Jerry's 3-1-1 (3 knockouts) in those fights, COME ON HOOKIE, YOU COULD DO BETTER THAN THAT! YOUR THE EX-EXPERT REMEMBER!
No! The prime Liston was not slow, before about '64. Watch the Bert Whitehurst fights, Sonny was quite quick. He also was chinny like Shavers, short and stubby like Foster and Spencer, or a late-starter like Lyle. Liston had an "84 reach, and was a much better fighter, (not to mention bigger) than Jerry. TKO-5. BTW, I think Jerry would have had a chance against Foreman. Foreman was clumsy, Sonny was quite agile.
Yes, a 1969 bout would have been interesting. Read: Quarry at or approaching prime. Liston, a shot late 30's shell. pvp? Quarry gets his **** handed to him. One last thing to consider. Jerry was a banger but never took out any of the big boys. The other contenders? Spencer? 0-7-1 after Jerry. Mac Foster? Sort of a 60's ****ey, wiping out old contenders. Lyle was green at the time and Shavers too was green. A prime Sonny vs. a prime Jerry would have been bloody ugly!
Yeah if Jerry Quarry were standing in for Patterson in 1961 it pretty much would have been the same outcome.. Can't see Quarry making it out of the first against that version of Liston.
