National Boxing hall Of Fame, is this new ? -or a spin off they now Defunct World Boxing hall of Fame? And why does Al Bernstein make it? Its for Boxers NOT BLOWHARDS, Anyway their inducting Quarry, Chuvalo, and Folley this coming April.

 

whoever told you WBA newspaper archives would have the Monthly ratings? EASY??? I've had them for years , 1966-75, there are about 80 of 120 months listed , this is very time consuming and frustrating, 1975-79 had about 5 total!!! thats probably the biggest reason I used Ring. Nat Fleischer did the Ring rankings until 1972. Then Nat Loubet,became a sellout to Don King! If I can get a month to month of the WBA I would use them, and that top ten vs Quarry would have even less top ten wins, Quarry would again have 8.

Again, why use Ring magazines ratings? They were unofficial and had absolutely no baring on anything. In this era a champion could fight his entire life without defending against a Ring rated fighter UNLESS that rated fighter was in the NBA/WBA. That tells you all you need to know and thats beside the fact that Rings ratings were often arbitrary as Ive already pointed out several times. The mere fact that one of your examples vis-a-vis ranked fighters was that the Ring dumped Patterson for lack of activity when he was signed to fight a contender something like 8 months after having challenged for the title while being rated #1 and winning that fight via an impressive televised knockout 10 months after that title challenge shows you how flaky the Ring ratings were. That right there was a violation of their own policy. So no, I give zero credence to Ring ratings.

No, the idea that the NBA was stripping people willy nilly is ludicrous. You need to go back and understand the context. They stripped Ali because of the fallout of the 1950s whereby guys like Robinson and Archie Moore refused to defend their titles for YEARS against their #1 and the HW title was tied up for years between a very small group of fighters giving each other mandatory return bouts. There was a great outcry by many in the public as well as fighters in the top 10, promoters, and managers were had to sit on the sidelines and watch as the sport stagnated. The NBA went about stripping people (And I agree with this policy) to show that it actually had teeth and could enforce its rules after years of criticism. Champions are not kings despite styling themselves as such. They dont get to dictate who they fight, when, where, and under what rules. It was abuses of such practices in the past that made a mockery of the idea of a sporting challenge and one of the many reasons the NBA was formed (and thank goodness). You can follow the NBA ratings and see a logic and purpose behind the flow of contenders in and out. You cant do that with the Ring. Youll see weird names pop up in weird places all the time from the 1930s on up. Ring always acted like it held itself to a higher standard but thats absolute bull****. Month to month you can see fighters pop into ratings without ever having fought a contender, you can see them drop from ratings for no reason, you can see them rated in weight classes they never fought in because Ring didnt recognize accepted weight classes. That alone skewed their ratings for half of the 50s and most of the 60s. Its stupid to pretend these ratings were worth a ****.

Im not saying the WBA/NBA was infallible. They even admitted they werent, to their credit, something Fleischer and his New York cadre never would do. I think their treatment of Frazier after he refused to partake in their tournament was especially shabby. But I also understand that under the extraordinary circumstances of the times given the controversy surrounding Ali they did the best they could and actually helped to create what I consider one of the greatest tournaments in the history of the sport with a noble purpose.

 

Besides Chuvalo, who else dropped Quarry???

 

Good points and like I've said time after time before, if NBA AND WBA (AS OF 8-23-62) Have their ratings listing- in order instead of 8 or 9 months a year from Newspaper research . I would use them (may anyway)-Ask Bob Foster about the WBA stripping titles, and Patterson I see was not rated either against Cooper (under Russian special investigation thou)
LUDICROUS COLUMN:
WBA DID NOT RANK MUHAMMAD ALI when he flew thru the ropes for the Battle of the century! Ali (who was stripped twice, won the WBA title 4 times!) And 0nly ranked him #1 after Ali had won a court battle to be back in the Rankings June 29, 1971.

Jimmy Ellis lose's 4 with a draw 1973-74 and was still rated in the WBA Top Ten!
1974 they ranked George Chuvalo back in the top ten , and i'm not kidding!
1970 Quarry lose's to granite George, and demoted to #7 where he probably belonged for awhile.
February 28, 1970 Quarry is back at #4 without having a bout.
"Irish Jerry" #2 lose's to Ali a second time and retires July 25, 1972, and is replaced by then UNRANKED Jimmy Ellis who is inserted at #4.
If anyone can get me they Official WBA month to month lists of 1960's, 70's - be elated to use them.

Jerry was one of the most dangerous fighter's after he was decked (7 times in 66 pro bouts) a 3-2-1 record with 3 full count knockout wins was his record after being floored. and 4 if you count "after the first round bell" Rufus Brassell!

 

I remember days leading up to the Muhammad Ali vs Karl Mildenberger title bout in 1966, Ali admitted his concern for his match with Mildenberger, stating that his few amateur losses were to southpaws.
