Here is a bad quality interview with Jerry Quarry from 1982. He was still able to talk well at this point, maybe he would have deteriorated on his own after this point without going back into the ring, there is no way of knowing. It's well documented Jerry was messed up and a danger to himself ahead of his last fight but on this interview quarry certainly talks a lot better in 1982 than Ali did before his last fight.

A tragic ending to a career and a life.

You can go back to the seventies to see Jerry's initial demise.
Seemed to be chiseled and in great shape when he 10-2-ood Lyle in Feb. 73. I would speculate that his drug (and other problems) may have increased in 73. A little more "doughy" against Shavers but got the job done tho I still think it was a matter of catching Earnie with a (body?) shot that did Shavers in. After that IMO, it was (obviously) back to abuse with the journeyman Joe Alexander almost taking his head off a mere 3 months later. Then Frazier II in June 74, a fight that Jerry fought well for ONE round, but backing up and trying to box which isn't exactly his forte. A last minute sub 9 months later against Norton then...the Zenon embarrassment in 77? (Wasn't that the undercard for Norton-Bobick?)
Simply too much punishment for a great fighter who turned pro at a very young age and found himself semi-washed up at 30 for a number of reasons. :verysad
On the good side, you could have written a book an counter-punching with Jerry's highlight clips. Young counter-fighters TODAY could learn from him! Also I heard that Earnie and Mac Foster attended his funeral among others. That gave me a lot of respect for both of those men!
    R.I.P. great Warrior! :verysad :good

Preaching to the choir here, but Jerry definitely should have stayed retired after Norton. He had a good TV commentary gig going with CBS. It's a shame he blew it by taking the Zanon fight on ABC in late '77. It would've been cool to hear Jerry's views on the '80's heavyweights & beyond.

I really agree with Jerry and his CBS sports spectacular job, A job he excelled , Divorces, family problems you name it, and it is too bad he could just not have stayed out of the Ring permanetly after 1975 for sure, when he beat masters he was still good, Masters was big and in shape, considered a comer at the time, i'd take em over peter mcneeley !!-------Jerry fought Zanon on the undercard NORTON-YOUNG 11/5/77.

Zanon dominated the fight but had no chin whatsoever, and Jerry managed to drop him three times and eke out a win. It was very unimpressive though, and he should never have been in there in the first place.
