I'm really looking forward to this one. I hope the author gives some enlightenment on the Walcott-Lee Q. Murray fight, which had a real stench attached to it. Was Murray paid off?? I've always wondered....
I have always suspected that it was on the level, because: A. Walcott was the ultimate spoiler before his worth was understod. B. Murray had a genuine chance of getting a title shot.
An overdue biography on Jersey Joe but it looks like it's still a few months away from publishing. I notice it's due to be published by McFarland and unfortunately, their books are usually quite expensive to the UK market.
I have had over 70 boxing books and MOST of the Bios are a let down, writing and visually speaking... JJ Walcott is one of my favourite fighters, I'll get the book, but I hope I'm not disappointed. i.e Durans book, absolute ****!
I'd really be looking forwards to it if I didn't know for a fact that the writer will (quite rightly) stress the Walcott angle in Louis II and that Mendoza will be all over that.
I had a chance to read the book by Jim as it was written and he's done a nice job with it. Saw him this weekend and he said it's due out in February.
If I find the time, I may try to pick up a copy myself. One thing about Walcott, is that he is a very inspirational individual from the standpoint that he set an example that he could accomplish something that he otherwise was not supposed to. Gives me like myself in my late 30's hope for things like career changes, setting new goals, etc....
This biography will help Walcotts reputation in two key ways. A. It will tell the full story of the circumstances of his early career, and the disadvantages he opperated under. B. It will flesh out his career in the late 40s, in terms of the contemporary significance of his key wins, and show how he realy cleaned out the division. Notice that I know without even having picked up the book, that it will move the debate in this direction.
It will be virtualy impossible for iot not to. Somtimes before a biography is released, I have a good idea what the thrust of it will be, because I know what nuggets of information I keep tripping over.
I hope it is a detailed bio with actual coverage and info rather than another 101 level job .. we will see ... the subject matter could be fascinating ...
