I found a copy of the program from Walcotts funeral in 1994. In the obituary, it stated that when Jersey Joe Walcott was a boy, his father had a vision that he would one day be the heavyweight champion of the world.
Interesting, because Marciano took the title off of him, and Marciano's mother had a prognostication that she needed his prayers, lighting 13 candles in the the church instead of the usual 1. What round did Marciano stop Walcott in? I guess parents have a way of knowing.
Seems like the story comes from this book, but is it actually true? In the interview with Rocky's mother, she just says she put up a 'bunch of candles' in the church. Perhaps the legend became 13 later on, or it was used as a promotional tool. This content is protected https://www.amazon.ca/Title-Rocky-Marciano-candle-story/dp/0936369841
