Underated win? Charles was the reigning heavyweight champion who had not lost in 4 years. This was the only time charles was ever knocked out in his prime.

underated ko? have you ever seen a fighter walk in like he was taking a stroll in the park.......and then BOOM!!!

It's one of the best punches I've ever seen.

Walcott timed his jab perfectly. The second he saw the motion of the shoulder, he slid his left foot out for balance, slipped to the left of the jab, and loaded his left up for the picture perfect hookercut. All in a fluid motion.

Agreed. Timing the jab like that, thats not something you learn in the gym. thats something you pick up after 21 years of ring experience. Cute Tricks.

That beautiful, sneaky, perfectly timed left hook has a glorious place in the pantheon of boxing history and alone qualifies JJW to his place in the Boxing HOF. That single punch symbolized a man's dreams and perseverence over the obstacles and defeats that may have beset him throughout his life up until then.

Walcott put Marciano on the seat of his pants for the first time with a similar hook... the difference between good durability and extraordinary durability.

Definitely one of the greatest knockouts of all time and an excellent win: Charles was beating heavyweights left and right before and after that period. It's also the only match in which Walcott conclusively beat Charles.

Walcott is the kind of guy that could put anyone on the seat of their trunks for a count. Combine it with his style and he's giving anybody - I don't care how big, dumb or ugly - serious problems in the ring. The sad thing is, as SQ has already pointed out, this comes with experience. The like of Walcott and Moore will never be seen in the ring again.

Oh, to the question - I don't think the KO itself is underated, after all, it's widely acknowledged to be one of the best of all time, but I think it's an underated win.

Its a great win, he had lost to Charles twice before was coming off a bad loss to Layne and managed to pull one of the best knockouts. Also at the time he was the oldest heavyweight champ ever. A great win.

    Stupid?

Rematches were consistently given back then, along with fighters not being able to chery pick their paydays.

Not to mention the man had balls.

You're right Russell. It was the culture in those days for a top challenger to receive a second chance, especially after a galant effort the first time. I will however, comment on the fact ( as I have done before ), that Jersey Joe Walcott did receive multiple title shots despite numerous failed efforts. He challenged for the title on some 6 different occasions and only capitalized on one of them.

Thank you, it's rare for me to post like that, but ol' Jersey Joe just sorta defies description as a fighter, with all his hard times and bad breaks early in his career, only to persevere and hit the jackpot with that beautiful hook.

If I remember rightly ,Walcott knocked Charles down with a right hand before and Charles was wary of it,Walcott compounded this by constantly "showing "him the right ,while really lining him up for that rising left .

On a side note Joe Louis in his autobiography "My Story",Louis picked Walcott ,along with Dempsey and Marciano to beat Ali.
