Ezzard Charles was generous to Jersey Joe with those two rematches and that's probably because of the mindset of those fighters back then. They were fighters's fighters, warriors first and everything else second. Balls, class and integrity, that's what Ezz and Jersey Joe were both blessed with. They both were a sort of "fit" for each other, stylistically, even if the fans didn't always agree. It might seem strange, but a latter day pairing, in the Middle division, was IMO, Dick Tiger-Emile Griffith, who might have had a few more bouts with each other, if it weren't so late in Tiger's career. They sytles that kind of meshed and more or less guaranteed their fights would go 15.
Ezzard talked of that fight and what took place. He practiced, in his words, deep relaxation before his fights, sometimes for hours, and it takes time to come out of this, having practiced the techniques I know what he meant when he told his story. Before the bout he was shaken out of it by a handler who didn't know what he was doing, then rushed in a daze to get ready ahead of time. Ezzard said he never came out of this daze and the bout was a dizzy blur. Charles, by the accounts of men who knew him, was very honest so his story has credence. It takes nothing away from the,,,"Hook", but it gives some info on what was going on with Ezzard.
