Walcott has elite ATG talent, special special natural talent. Had he been a little bit bigger, Holmes and Ali would get beaten by him. Which brings me to his handicap, his size. Not small, but not big at a chizzled 6'0 195lb. I still pick him over many of the bigger great heavies.

Nice post and thanks for that Burt. I would take Ali personally in a head to head matchup but like i say, i think Walcott is one of the most skilled heavies ever, so no disrespect.

glad people commented on the footwork, WOW

floyd mayweather, and boxing in general, owes a lot this man. he created moves and strategies that are widely used today but obviously baffling to those in his era. the footwork is brilliant (if only floyd would copy that...) and his knockout of charles rates as one of the best i've ever seen

great post burt. like teeto, i'll respectfully disagree on the walcott/ali pick but it's interesting putting his age into perspective with other ATG heavies

Good Point. Anyone find it coincidental how the modern great technicians of the era(Bernard Hopkins, James Toney) constantly refer to watching and studying film of Archie Moore and Jersey Joe Walcott to help make them more crafty, tricky, and open their minds to new moves?

exactly! i was surprised by walcott's shoulder roll. his judgement of distance was fantastic and he never wasted a shot, much like the mongoose
