Questions in the title. Jersey Joe Walcott at his best, Is there any of the many 80 s Alphabet title holders that he loses to? And if so, Who? And of course we're not counting Larry or Mike..
Knowing Walcott he’s bound to drop one. Although an at his best Walcott doesn’t drop many and probably avenges his loss
He isn't keeping a clean sheet against; Weaver Cooney Spinks Dokes Berbick Page Norton Coetzee Thomas Witherspoon Smith Williams Ruddock Tucker Douglas The majority of whom I think beat his conqueror Rex Layne handily . Which gives me a subject for a thread.
These are the kinds of fighter that he would lose against from time to time, but I suspect that he would establish himself as the best of the bunch. He would put together a longer run of form than any of them, and his record would be the one that stood out.
Quite a few I don't see him getting past mcvey tbh. Not to say that Joe's not rated miles above em, just styles imo with a few of em.
Assuming he’s operating under fair and equitable circumstances that are more in line with the times then I think his chances of beating some of them rise exponentially.
During his supposed post war Hey Day, he was something like 20-10. That's dropping quite a few. I think the 80's heavies are generally far too much for him, including far too young.
Yeah but when u look at those losses it’s not so bad. Especially being be avenged most of them. You can use the Walcott that fought Louis the first time as opposed to the one that fought Marciano lol age wise would be fine.
Would Conn or Godoy do better against this group than they did against Louis? This happens to everybody at one point or another during their career. They have questionable or odd performances. We don't take that performance as the standard bearer. We take fighters at their best, which means prime/peak performance. Is it your view that Layne was Walcott peak performance that he faces all of these guys, as that guy?
I'd say Walcott was better against Louis and I've said so several times here. The problem is if it is accepted that he subsequently declined that is seen as an insult to Marciano. My purpose in mentioning the Layne loss was soley to show Walcott was capable of dropping decisions he should have won he was obviously a better fighter than Layne. I think a prime Jersey Joe,[whenever you think that was,] might bat 60% or better against the 8Os contenders. No problem with picking a younger Walcott at all! Id say he was getting his best results from 45 to 48. When he beat; Baksi Bivins Oma Gomez Ray Maxim He also lost to; Ray Maxim Which should be factored in don't you think?
