jersey joe walcott vs ken norton - who do you take

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by David Hanssen, Oct 16, 2014.

  1. I would rank Jersey Joe Walcott the better boxer of the two. He was a slick sob and could give Ken Norton a few difficulties along the way.

On the other hand, Norton was a good boxer himself, and he also carried with him more power. I don't see chin being a factor, as Walcott didn't carry sufficient power to stop Norton.

Considering that Nortons trouble were against hardhitting sluggers, not against skilled boxers, I think he would win this one. If he could give a close-to-prime Muhammad Ali hell, he should be able to defeat Walcott.

    Ken Norton by UD.

In this case I think that might be very significant.

Norton was usually good against boxers he could put pressure on but in this case the boxer could also whack pretty good with both mitts and I see Walcott hurting or dropping Ken possibly more than once and keeping Ken a bit leery and at bay but if Ken pursues may go down again or stopped. Pin point power of JJW and side shuffles give KN too much trouble

Walcott was not your typical boxer, he had legs, good hand speed and sneaky power

I think both are overrated, I deem Walcott better tough fight though in styles.

Bummy D raises some good points. Norton was hell against boxers but in Walcott he would be facing as one promoter once said, "A cutie who could punch". I can evision Norton working behind his good jab looking to set up his overhand right while Walcott uses clever defensive manouvers to avoid it. When Norton gets close enough Walcott lands a good one that either drops Kenny or puts him on the defensive. I remember the Young/Norton fight where Norton opted to go to the body all night after Young popped him a few good ones when Ken got ambitious. Walcott was just just as crafty as Young but hit harder and that would would cause Norton to adopt a more cautious approach. This fight could still go to norton via decision but a Walcott win is more likely IMO.

I like the much bigger Norton. Ken had a terrific jab off an 80" reach and that would make it hard for Walcott.

Who gives a damn about Norton's reach. He pressured and fought on the inside. He never fought anybody from range. You really think he's going to dance around Jersey Joe flicking jabs in his face, boxing like Lennox Lewis?

He had a bigger wingspan advantage on Quarry than he would on Walcott still slugged away on the inside, getting himself hurt a few times in the process.

Walcott knows what to do. He comes out bombs blazing and puts Norton away with an uppercut. All 80 inches of him.
