    I disagree with your assessment.

He lost to Louis, Charles and Marciano, because those are fighters that you might reasonably expect him to lose to.

They were the best in the world, and clearly on the same sort of level as him.

There is no need to fit his hypothetical prime around these losses.

Also the reason that he kept getting title shots, was to some extent because the outcome of the previous fights had been seen as being unsatisfactory.

I like Walcott’s fighting style to prevail over Oscar Bonavena - possibly by a decision

That's quite a compelling post, I have to say. I had Walcott a clear winner, but now you've got me thinking...

As I see the fight you have two HW of completely opposite boxing ability's and styles, on the one hand there is JJW with a good clever boxing brain, lots of nuance and the movement of body to avoid heavy punchers ( of course with exceptions ) a good chin on balance, and a better than average puncher ( lest we forget the much lauded E Charles, was poleaxed by JJW ) Rocky was floored and hurt on several occasions, so yea, he could both punch and box as dictated .
Then we have Bonavena, surely one of the crudest and least skillful HW of all time, a out and out brawler unorthodox as they come, with no battle plan, other than walk forward and punch albeit quite hard, but with no defense other than his granite chin, summing up I envisage a fairly comfortable points win for Jersey Joe.

You are starting to doubt Walcott's chances against Bonavena, because he lost to Louis, Charles and Marciano?

In 15 rounds, I would expect Jersey Joe to outbox and frustrate Bonavena, and probably stop him late or win a wide decision.

I favour Walcott too, but I am not too sure about. Bonavena was a helluva fighter and even Joe Frazier couldn`t stop him.
