Hi all I remember reading years ago what Jersey Joe Walcott said after the Ali vs Liston fight...words to the effect: "Not me, not Louis, not Marciano could have beaten him [Ali] that night". I have since been searching for the reference, does anybody know it? Thanks
It's in the post-mortems on Ali's career in 1967 when it looked like he was going to jail. Walcott said, "He could beat Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, and a fellow named Jersey Joe Walcott". https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=DYwEAAAAIBAJ&pg=7122,3765275&hl=en
Is he talking abt Ali vs Liston 2.....the one that the timkeeper had the KO wrongly at one minute of the first round, and the one Jersey Joe let someone out of the crowd stop the fight, and the one many legit fighters thought Liston took a "dive"......that fight?
Walcott was Ali's biggest fan. He practically said that Ali was the greatest, before Ali himslef had the confidence to say it! The other Louis era prophet was Tony Galento!
Most people think Walcott took a "dive" in the Rocky fight #2. Give little credence to Walcott's statements.
Walcott should say nothing, the fight was fixed and he sucked as the ref with the count. How did Ali vs Liston II end? With both fighters on their feet.
