ATGs like James Toney studied Joe and were inspired by his technique.

Your top 10 boy Wlad don't inspire anybody and everything he knows about boxing could be written on a matchbox.

Walcott's reputation has inflated through the years , he was not considered a great fighter whilst he was active.Possibly he was not as good as many now think ,and Layne was a bit better than he is generally given credit for?

One very good fighter has an off night against a good fighter who has one of his best. ?

Then how did Walcott display such a beautiful one punch knockout/title winning performance over Ezzard Charles the following year? And how did he almost beat a prime Rocky Marciano two years later if he was diminishing so fast?

I think it's possible it's 1 of those that could go either way going with the promoters fighter getting the nod. From the footage Walcott looked to be landing the more accurate punches. Walcott especially at this age didn't lack a fast pace and Layne did fight at a fast pace at times. Layne ofcourse was the great white hope, backed by Dempsey I think and more highly thought of than Marciano before they fought.

@McGrain he certainly used the right hand but when you bust your hand you can still punch with it, you just can't punch through it, it gives way. You can also punch with the other undamaged kuckles. I don't know if it's legit though, maybe but he certainly commited to a few rights

    "promoters fighter"

Well, the promoters didn't give Layne any breaks. It was Walcott who went on to get two shots at Charles while Layne was matched with tough spoilers like Satterfield and Brion, and then Marciano. Layne certainly had earned the July championship shot over Walcott.

Layne was managed by the straight-arrow Morman Marv Jensen. It is a very hard sell that Jensen was mob-connected and so had the inside track. More likely he was too much of an honest outsider which is why Layne was sided off the championship track.

I've never seen a complete film to judge this fight, but I've never read any report that questioned the result.

*I also think that prior to his hard defeats to Marciano and Charles, Layne was a better fighter than many now give him credit for.

Thanks! I never saw the Walcott Layne match. Just gave it a quick glimpse. Looked to me like Walcott was doing slightly better in the rounds shown with the exception of the final round which was big round for Layne. Will watch again when I have more time. Thanks for the add!
