Jersey Joe Walcott's physique at age 37 was INCREDIBLE!

People talk about how hard folks like Jeffries, Marciano and Frazier trained, but Jersey Joe's legs were prepared to travel the distance of a marathon whenever he entered competition. He wasn't only dancing backwards and shifting side to side, he was bending his knees when he did plant himself, and subjected his opponents to continual dekes and feints. His exertions even when not punching were incredible. He went the championship distance four times while in his middle 30s, and not by clinching or covering against the ropes to take a breather. If Ali had his training discipline and conditioning habits, his health might be fully intact today. Aging fighters should work harder than when they were younger, and if their bodies do not permit this, they should consider retirement. Walcott should serve as an example and inspiration to all boxers who are advancing in years. Sure, he had tremendous natural gifts, but he also made the most of what his maker gave him.

Im not saying it wasnt a fair fight, Im saying that his physique has no place in a discussion of the all time "natural" builds of the sport.

Hall was the one that brought it up and yet said he didn't take anything. Weird.

Nobody knows exactly how long Roy and Hall were taking whatever exactly it was they were taking. ESPN had what Roy took as andro, which oddly enough, I hear was made by non other than the chemist who made the Balco PEDs. Some debate those claims.

His physique even as an amateur was quite defined. And at the start of his pro career, it was all there so even if you don't want to go off his LH career, he still always had an incredible physique.

But yes, anybody that is around after PEDs were released in the States can be suspect. No question. Shady sport; Shady times.

Roy, like many others, lift weights so it will shape the muscles different.

    37 isn't old.

There's no reason we shouldn't look in the same shape at 37 as we are at 27. That goes for everyone, not just athletes.

I have a pic of Arch with Tyson when he must've been in his 70's or even 80's and he was still broader than Tyson - its baffles me how he ever made 175?????? I struggle to make that and I'm WAY smaller than him??:huh

Duodenum, I first saw Joe Walcott in MSG in 1946, when he kod a young
great puncher Tommy Gomez, from Tampa ,FL. Walcott, then lost to
Joey Maxim and Elmer Ray, who he defeated in rematches, before his
fight with Joe Louis, Dec5,1947..Should have one that one,for sure!

Great clip BD, of a great picture...A couple of years ago I met the author
Budd Schulberg who wrote "The Harder They Fall"..I believe the big guy who plays "Primo Carnera", was a heavyweight of that time Abel Cestac
from Argentina, who fought in the USA....b.b.

I don't think Abel Cestac was in the movie but he's an interesting mention in this thread. The man certainly had a physique on him and at 6'4, 225 lbs would fit in today's heavyweight picture.

Didn't have much success against Archie Moore and Bob Baker though.

You are right ..The actor playing Toro was Mike Lane, not Abel Cestac..
I nrecall Abel Cetac from the 1940s...Above picture of Cestac is very impressive...Argentina breeds big tough guys, Firpo, Godoy, Cestac, Bonavena etc...

    I believe that too-----NOW!

When I was 21, I did think being age 37 and still kickin' ass in the ring was a big deal..... But when I got to be age 37, I said to myself, a lot of this age factor crap depends on how well you've taken care of yourself.....

However, the body does slow down and regress in a sportsman type manner at about 40........ After 40 it gets hard as hell to keep up with 25 year olds......
