I saw Kulej in Copenhagen shortly before the 1964 Olympics, where he stopped Preben Rasmussen, one of the best Danish amateurs at the time. I remember Rasmussen crying as he left the ring - probably thinking that he had blown his Olympic chance. But despite this loss, he was selected to represent Denmark in Tokio anyway (where he was outpointed by Eddie Blay in the first round). The following year Rasmussen won a silver medal at the European championships in East Berlin - losing (this time on points) against Kulej in the final. Kulej was one of the outstanding amateurs back in the 60s (repeating the Olympic victory in 1968 in Mexico, as well as twice winning European gold)... but coming from Poland, he of course never turned pro.
