Mondragón has settled into a nice rhythm now, and tightened up his defense at mid-range. He's sniping with the pinball-launcher right off his rear shoulder, behind the jab, catching Sánchez with it at will - and liberally peppering in body shots to keep the guard from staying fixed in place.

    10-9 & 20-19 Mondragón

Sánchez is trotting counter-clockwise and popping jabs into the mitts of Mondragón, playing matador, very cautious and reticent with the left hand. Mondragón is charging in halfway, strapping the side of Sánchez's neck with the right hand but not over-committing and stepping all the way inside, making sure to continue measuring distance with the jab. Sánchez almost walks into a right hand, catching it and countering with quick straight lefts and right hooks.

    10-9 Sánchez, close

    29-29

Sánchez doing really nice work casting his rod from well outside with a fly-fishing left, but he isn't minding his p's and q's as he straightens up and is getting face-painted by Mondragón's left jab. Mondragón then chasing him with high inclined rights. Both landing well. Mondragón getting off more often in combination.

    10-9 Mondragón, close

    39-38 Mondragón

    Somebody's 0 did not go.

(well, technically, both lost the zero in their draw column)

I scored the Sanchez/Mondragon fight for Mondragon, 3-0-1 rounds, 40-37 points. I think the exchange of knockdowns in the 1st round trumped anything else that either fighter did in that round, although it seems obvious all three judges scored that 1st round 10-9 for Sanchez, who to be fair was clearly having the better round until Mondragon scored that hard knockdown. I had Mondragon JUST edging each of the subsequent three rounds. But I thought before the result was announced that I'd be okay with any outcome, it was that kind of fight. And so the majority draw (39-37 Mondragon, 38-38x2) seems fair enough. Sanchez was the technically better fighter, but threw a lot of swarming arm punches. Mondragon stayed comfortable in the pocket, kept his left foot outside Sanchez's right foot, and landed good solid right hands fairly consistently. I give Mondragon credit for overcoming the early knockdown, and for looking comfortable against a southpaw who came in with more professional experience than he did.

I'm glad Yenifel got rid of those awful Urijah Faber braids. Makes it a lot easier to root for him. :sisi1

Crazy that he's a 14 year veteran, and has never even fought an eliminator - let alone contended for a world title. His momentum got badly hurt by that string of losses to Chris Avalos, Juan Antonio Rodríguez Mozo, and Eric Hunter from 2012-14. With an upset here, the wait could finally be over and the climb made worthwhile.

    Round 1

Magdaleno is quick to strike the first blow, sweeping a left down low into Vicente's gut beneath his elbows from outside, then darting even further away to row out the southpaw jab. Vicente is patiently walking Magdaleno down, shooting left jab feints up into Magdaleno's right glove. A few more of those long reach-in lefts on the body from Magdaleno, but always taking care to keep his chin both tucked & turned away from Vicente's power right, as well as not bowing all the way into the strike zone. Magdaleno plays a little possum on the ropes as Vicente starts pecking in with jabs and rights, and comes off them with a chopping left - dropping Vicente! Flash knockdown, unhurt - but he did look a little surprised by Magdaleno's speed. Vicente is checking the right jab, punching his left halfway out to dispel it.

    10-8 Magdaleno
