I might have a go at putting one together for completeness. Anyone have footage they wouldn't mind me using?

    Am I allowed to comment?

That jab at 0:12 followed by bringing it back low with his chin sticking out would get him laughed at by boxing trainers today

At 0:55 just swinging wildly and aimlessly with no head movement and no use of his feet to hit then get out of range which allows Moran to counter.

Willard nowhere near active enough with the jab. Doesn’t ever double up on it.

1:27 throws a measly counter right uppercut as Moran moves into range which is thrown with zero leverage or body torque then gets countered twice by looping bar room haymakers because his guard is low, his feet were stuck in the mud, and he didn’t move his head or upper body.

Can’t put combinations together unless they are slapping like short hooks on the inside which look like arm punches. Has no concept of a good 1-2...never hooks off the jab. Can’t hook off the straight right.

His best sequence is at 2 min mark where he uses his feet to back out of range or a Moran haymaker then sticks a counter jab in his face followed up by another jab...good we’re getting somewhere

Not a bad jab by Willard at 3 min mark, no follow up straight right or hook or combination

Back to Crude jess at 3:24..getting helped by a Moran bar room haymaker because his guard was low, he didn’t move his head or his feet

Willard makes him miss at 3:55..:Moran’s wide open...no follow up hooks or uppercuts against a wide open small man..

Willard’s feet were so sloppy. Terrible stance, feet to wide, has no bounce on his toes, hardly ever moved them, took horrible angles...always straight on

If you want. But I'm not doing it to try and show he was some master boxer, I'm well aware he wasn't, it's just there no tribute to him that I know of, and I'd like there to be one for all the important champions.

    Do you know what?

I honestly wish that I had the technical savvy, to remaster Vitally Klitschko to look like Jess Willard, then watch all the super heavyweight aficionados pour scorn upon him!

Willard best stuff was size, power, conditioning to go many rounds and durability. All of which stood out in his time. He had mediocre distance skills.

On the downside he has poor speed, stance, defense, and was a little clumsy. I see little in terms of using his jab or any other punch for that matter to set up a combination. Countering ability? Not seen on film. Come on Janitor, he would not win a round vs Vital Klitschko..

I’m sorry I don’t see the comparisons to Vitali Klitschko at all in terms of punching ability, work rate, jabbing ability, defense, footwork, movement, and ring savvy....

I do think Willard compares to Kevin McBride a bit.

Vitali would win every minute of every round until he knocks him out. Huge difference in class and ability all around

Do you guys approve of adding in punch sounds? Somewhat fakery, but I think it adds a lot to immersion.

If you're going to put in fake punch sounds you may as well put in a soundtrack too.

    This may do:

Willard had size, strength and big heart, but his skills leave me very unimpressed.

Taishan Dong and his opponent, Alex Rozman came along 100 years too late. In Willard's time, both might have been champions. Neither of them are good boxers, but fundamentally and athletically they are better than Willard and Moran.

Taishan is crude, but at least he has a decent stance and he moves by moving the front foot first to go forward, the back foot first to go backward, etc. Willard has no stance, he leans on his left foot, and his footwork is like an untrained person. Willard looks like what he was, a guy who started boxing at almost 30 and beat other people who weren't good because he was bigger. His opponent, Moran looks even worse.

Dong fights 4 rounders and lies about his height. Fighting a guy Hughie Fury, and a cruiserweight club fighter, both KOed in a round.

Here's him losing to Jamal Woods, including getting rocked, before getting a gift. Horrifically slow too, Willard had much more speed.

Dong is terrible. Willard would knock him out him easilly.

You're right. Hard to imagine that anybody who actually watches and understands boxing would consider them comparable, in terms of skills and ability.

Dong is even worse than Willard, in fact he makes Willard look like a slickster. I agree, Willard would thump him.

His defence was actually decent. Pretty hard to protect yourself from faster foes when you're a big target with small gloves, but he manages to block a lot and tie up a lot. Well not against Dempsey. . . .
