Jess Willard vs Frank Bruno

Willard would be a sitting duck for Bruno's heavy jab and right hand and would be blown away Rudi Gauwe style in 2/3 rounds.
Frank didnt have much trouble with big, stationary journeymen with little defence..........and make no mistake, Willard would be journeyman level in the modern era

 

Willard is not Lewis. He gets beaten up.

 

Frank Bruno, a good boxer who beat some good boxers vs. a guy who walked off a farm at 29 years old and started boxing? Willard looks terrible on film, stiff, unskilled, and not athletic. Mark Gastineau and Ed "Too Tall" Jones were two big guys who started boxing late and they were excellent athletes, but neither was able to overcome their late start in boxing (probably would have been champions in Willard's time). Bruno by quick, easy knockout. I doubt Bruno ever fought anybody worse than Willard.

 

Bruno was pretty much only very strong, but if he doesn’t know how to actually fight on the inside strength will mean very little, mismatch. Big Jess wears him down in the clinch of heaven and sends him to hell with his Johnson buster right.

 

Holding and hitting in the modern era is a sign of desperation, hitting then holding is an art- see Duran.

Looking at film of Willard it’s hard to favor him aside from perhaps a puncher’s chance. He holds his guard dangerously low. Has no footwork and diminishes his own size advantage by over bending his knees. He’d be too easy of a target for most quality fighters starting from the 1930’s onward. It’s hardly a stretch to surmise that someone like Bob Pastor would have beaten the crap out of him
