Some interesting articles. Over 20 rounds, if I had to put money down I would probably take Willards power over Fultons chin at some point. It would not be a confident pick.
Willard is well documented to have avoided Fulton. It had much to do with a daunting similarity in size and if there is some legitimacy to that exhibition then the hesitation was understandable. Willard grinned at the prospect of Dempsey because he was so much smaller; he truly believed that he could not hurt him. A big point in this theorised match-up is the power of Fulton who could really punch with either hand. If not knock him out he could have made Willard cagey to then smooth over a decision.
les darcy, was the greatest fighter that ever lived. he kod fulton in a spar in 1915. darcy was a middle...and died of blood poisoning, or murder a month or two later...... .
This fight was close to being made. I wonder if history would of been altered had it happened. I don't see anyone picking Fulton. I would lean Fulton. Far more active.
Willard didn't avoid Fulton. There was a public backlash against the fight when newspapers printed the purse amounts the fighters were to receive during the famine. There were political cartoons that depicted Willard and Fulton stealing money people donated to relief funds.
McCarty,[no H,]was offered a title fight with champion in exile Jack Johnson, the fight to be held in Canada, this was just before the Pelkey tragedy. Tommy Burns was offered the chance to promote it,he turned it down saying Johnson was not a man of fit character to promote, although a few weeks earlier he had pestered him for a title shot! No contract was ever signed by Johnson to fight McCarty, though Johnson would gladly have defended against Luther as he was short of $$$, Jack was exiled in Europe . McCarty did not have the experience to tangle successfully with Johnson at that time , but he would almost certainly have beaten the skillful but fragile Wells, who lacked the temperament and self confidence for the game.
Keep in mind that it was difficult to stage a world heavyweight title bout when Jess Willard was the champion, especially after professional boxing was banned in the state of New York. - Chuck Johnston
