We clearly have to favour Willard at this stage.

Of course Fury is a work in progress, and we can't be sure quite how he will turn out yet.

is fury really that bad? hes got a couple of decent wins for a fighter at this stage of a career and although techincally flawed its nothing that cant be sorted out, i still believe!

Was Firpo that bad? Abysmal, and it's a wonder Dempsey went life and death with such a terrible fighter.

Willard wasn't that bad. For starters, very tall HWs always tend to look awkward, that has been true for years and was true of the Klitschkos early on. Willard was said to have a very stiff, hard jab, an effective right hand to the heart (a legitimate strength sapping blow, often a ko punch, sadly underused today) and a man-killing uppercut. He was not only favored to beat Dempsey, but to kill him, too. He fought in an era when fights went 20 or more rounds, outdoors, in the heat, with 4 ounce gloves, and you were allowed to wrap your hands with packing tape. By comparison, Tyson Fury, with all due respect, competes in a non-contact sport.
And, to be fair to Dempsey and Firpo, both men were hurt early. They quit boxing about 20 seconds in and got to fighting.

one of the reasons (sorry burt) dempsey gets so disrespected on the forum. in the films we have of him he went life and death (and should have been counted out...today he would have lost which counts against him) against a poor man's heavyweight mayorga, brutalized a lumbering, out of shape giant in willard and got dominated twice by tunney. based on what i've seen on film, he doesn't live up to his reputatation

just to clarify my cmoment wasnt a slight on willard, it was kind of a tangent on the debate as a lot of people here have called fury "awful" or "shite", but tbf hes a prospect at the minute nothing more

What about Gibbons, Carpentier and Sharkey? They're all a mixed bag too IMO, the finish to Sharkey is similar to Ortiz-Mayweather, but a hammer of a knockout blow all the same.

    Gibbons

As a side note i think Tyson Fury has the most misleading name ever.

Fury is more active and has better skills. Willard hits harder. I think Fury is durable enough to take an occasional hard shot from Willard. I would say a draw in 12 rounds is possible. What the heck might as well pick that option.

There is no film of Willard boxing well. He's gangly and clumsy in the ring. I will say Willard looks OK vs. Moran who seems a tad gun shy engaging with the giant.

:thinkim going to go more thoroughly but i think the gibbons fight is most indicative of his skills and he's a tremendous inside fighter, though frustrated and neutralized by gibbons at times.

the sharkey knockout looks to me soley based on the dick punch. in slow mo the left hook doesn't look like very much, it seems like he drilled him to the dick and threw in a headbutt for good measure.
