He was a very tough light heavyweight From the 70s and 80s. He sort of coasted in and out of the role of journeyman and contender. Faced many very good light heavyweights and cruisers. Even upset a few. any good stories or Info on him ? Any great fights to recommend that he was in ?
His fight with Leon Spinks is unbelievable. His fights vs Conteh and Eddie weren't too bad either. He reminds me of a smoother Bob Foster. Tall, rangy and a good lead hand. It's fun to watch. Another one you wanna watch from him is the fight with Cuello. If you can find the Lopez fights, watch those too.
George is right. The Spinks fight is unbelievable. One of the greatest underrated fights ever. George covered it. Just about everything Burnett was in was at least a decently good match. Some say the Muhammad fight was boring, but I thought it was alright. The only fight I haven't seen is the Mundine match, but I would imagine even that would be worth watching.
Well, thanks to this thread I am going to watch the Spinks fight...for some reason I have never seen it. For those who did, how did you feel about the decision? Reports are that it was booed
It was nothing to be booed. It was close, and Burnett could have reasonably earned it. I gave it to Spinks by a point or so. Hardly worth mentioning.
well then either the crowd was wrong or the report is erroneous? But thanks for informing me what is worth my mentioning on a public forum! After one of the most exciting fights of the year, it appeared that the three officials were in a distinct ringside minority when the decision for Spinks was announced and loudly booed. https://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Leon_Spinks_vs._Jesse_Burnett
I had it a draw IIRC. I find it hard to believe that the crowd were sitting there, pen in hand, scoring it on a round by round basis. It was very close.
Well, what I mean is that it wasn't wrong for the crowd to think the decision was erroneous, but even if Burnett should have won, a Spinks decision was neither unfair, except maybe the fact that he won by a UD. What I meant was that the fight was so close that it's not worth mentioning who won. As for the fight itself, it's definitely worth mentioning.
Excellent fighter who fought an absolute who’s who in an extremely competitive era. Had some questionable decisions go against him against some top tier guys and gave damn near all of them a hard time. Gregory was the only one that ever outclassed him, from what I’ve seen. I’ve never seen the Spinks fight, either. Then again I’ve never really watched any Leon Spinks fight. Heavyweight phobia. Suppose I oughta fix that someday.
This. Burnett didn’t give anyone an easy night. Burnett definitely was an excellent fighter and also an excellent trainer. I used to see him from time to time at Broadway Boxing Gym in the mid 90’s and he was a very nice guy, but also a perfectionist. He wouldn’t let you use any of the equipment wrong or do any drills wrong whether you were a random guy off the street or a pro.
This is how I saw Spinks-Burnett and what I wrote. I always thought Jesse was the ultimate hard-luck fighter. I always felt bad decisions against Conteh and Spinks, judges screwing up against Bash Ali and the last minute/jet-lag go for the vacant light heavyweight title really summed up his luck. Yet kept plugging away. Round 1: 10-9 Spinks Round 2: 10-9 Spinks Round 3: 10-9 Spinks Round 4: 10-9 Burnett Round 5: 10-9 Burnett Round 6: 10-9 Burnett Round 7: 10-9 Burnett Round 8: 10-9 Burnett Round 9: 10-9 Spinks Round 10: 10-9 Burnett Round 11: 10-9 Burnett Round 12: 10-9 Spinks Total: 115-113 Burnett (actual scores 116-113, 117-112 and 116-114 all for Spinks) At the time I first saw this I screamed highway robbery. Now I see it calmly and only have Burnett ahead by two points, which may be controversial, but maybe not a robbery. Still, I thought Burnett deserved it with his pinpoint punching over Leon's greater - but not so precise - workrate.
