Great interview there :good Sounds like such a cool guy, knows his boxing. With his record, a fight between Jofre and himself would've been unbelievable!!!!!!
Did you ever meet his manager JG; Harry kabakoff. I heard he was a bit of a character. I think I also read somewhere that he was born in Liverpool. can you shed any light on this either way?
I’ll bump this because JG’s interview was superb and would clearly be of interest to @ChrisJS Man, I miss Joe. Superb writer, superb guy.
Great interview. I want to try and find more of his fights. Another vote for Medel in the punchers department too. His technique and delivery of punches was so clean. I recently got the Medel-Pimentel fight which I’ve never seen. I’m very excited to watch that one and find as much as possible on all these warriors.
Pimentel fought numerous fights in San Antonio, while I was in college 80 miles away. His name was in the local newspapers quite often. In the fight description below, 2 potential Champions', plus Pimentel's, names are mentioned. 1968-10-29 : Jesus Pimentel 120 lbs beat Johnny Readano 116 lbs by KO in round 2 of 10 Location: Convention Center Arena, San Antonio, Texas, USA "There were 40 rounds of boxing scheduled for Tuesday night's boxing show at the Convention center Arena, but the fans saw less than 14 as the three top attractions, This content is protected stopped their opponents. The were amused by the grotesque antics of skinny Johnny Readano, who clowned for four minutes and 21 seconds. That's how long he stayed in with Pimental, who landed a liver shot and put an end to Readano's boasts of never having been off his feet in the ring." -San Antonio Light Attendance - 4,015 Gate - $18,558 Also on this card Mando Ramos fought Billy Coleman and Oscar Albarado fought Jerry Graci.
10 years ago I had a thread on him, fast forward to 2018 I have one of his bouts on my Youtube... This content is protected
It met him once and I didn't know who he was . He looked different. He was at a hall of fame dinner when I lived in California. Nice guy. Then I realized who he was..
"Promoter George Parnassus offered Ruben Olivares a brand new Ford LTD if he ended the bout within five rounds." 1971-12-14 : Ruben Olivares 118 lbs beat Jesus Pimentel 116½ lbs by RTD at 3:00 in round 11 of 15 Location: Forum, Inglewood, California, USA Referee: George Latka "The end of Jesus Pimental's career and lifelong title quest came after 11 rounds at the Forum Tuesday night when manager Harry Kabakoff stepped to the middle of the ring and told bantamweight champion Ruben Olivares, "Ruben, you won, you're still the champ." It was recorded as a knockout in the 11th round. Pimental's best moments came in the 3rd round when he abandoned his forward press tactic and lured Olivares into the ropes, where he opened a cut high on the left side of the champion's head, then forced Olivares to bearhug to recover from a solid left hook. But the pride of Mexico City caught up with Jesus in the 6th. Backed into a neutral corner, Pimental countered Olivares' left to the head with one of his own but was wide open for the following right that set him on his back on the apron, his feet dangling over the lower rope. After that, Pimental, 31, looked every bit of eight years older than his opponent. He almost accepted the comfort of the canvas when Olivares unloaded a furious series of head shots in the 9th, but decided to go out on his feet two rounds later." -Long Beach Press-Telegram Official scorecards (all for Olivares through 11 completed rounds) Referee George Latka - 8-1 Judge Lee Grossman - 9-3 Judge John Thomas - 9-2 Attendance: 14,713, Gate: $255,585 This bout was part of a double world title card along with the 1st Jose Napoles vs. Hedgemon Lewis welterweight title bout. Unofficial LB Press-Telegram scorecard at the stoppage - 11-2 Olivares Promoter George Parnassus offered Ruben Olivares a brand new Ford LTD if he ended the bout within five rounds. Purses: Olivares - $90,000, Pimental - $25,000 Post fight comments "He didn't get the car, but he's a great champion. I'm not planning to fight him - or anybody else - anymore." -Jesus Pimental, announcing his retirement. "That's his last fight, Father Time caught up with him tonight. I've got his wife, his mother and children to answer to. I'm not gonna let him get hurt." -Harry Kabakoff, Pimental's manager.
Rafael Herrera was fit and ready to fight that night as a standby in case Jesus pulled out at the last moment.
