I don't know if it's that big of an upset. Corrales was an unknown, but he clearly had skills. From the opening bell, Corrales looked like the superior fighter. Uchiyama looked slow and didn't know how to fight a southpaw.

Come on, he went to war against Miura.

Uchiyama has fought plenty of high-caliber southpaws, though - including his previous two opponents (Flores & Jomthong). I think it was a combination of Corrales' awkward style and just age catching up with him.

Age catches up to everyone. He was slow pulling his hands back to defend himself. Left it out there too long and gave Corrales the openings. His reflexes definitely looks shot.

Yeah, and he looked totally lost when it came time for him to adapt. In his prime Uchiyama, you'd think, would at least regroup in between rounds and think "okay, how do I solve this?". Instead he was just visibly rattled and kept sticking with Plan A until it got him kayoed.

I want to see Fortuna-Corrales. Two southpaws with fast hands.

...except one has a little craft to go with his athleticism, while the other doesn't.

And the one guy made Juan Antonio Rodriguez quit whereas Fortuna was a bloody mess and went the distance.

Wow, Corrales made beating Uchiyama look easy! Did not see that coming!

Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long to dethrone Uchiyama, I always thought he was an overrated champion. I thought Fortuna was gonna do it if that fight came off.

I'm told odds on Jazreel to win came down from 15/1 to 5/1 the day before the fight :think

Can't find anything to indicate an injury or bad camp as yet.

That is odd, I'd been strongly considering flipping to Corrales in Kirk's thread a few days beforehand, but when I saw that Corrales had missed weight and had to drain himself to make it, that caused me to stick with Uchiyama, that and the fact that no one else was going with Corrales, that if anything should have widen the odds.:think
