October 6th in Mexico City. WBC Latino super featherweight title at stake, González's fourth defense. González is coming off a three-year eight-fight unbeaten streak, and is 9-1 (6) dating to his last time in a marquee event (and last time entering as world champ), his WBC featherweight title loss to Gary Russell Jr. headlining on Showtime in 2015...with all nine wins coming at home in Mexico and the one loss, to Jonathan Oquendo to MD coming in Las Vegas on the Mayweather vs. Berto PPV undercard. He is currently ranked fourth by the WBC at 130lbs. Rojas is a year older and has actually been a pro three years longer, and is best remembered for a spirited effort against Vic Darchinyan that, despite winning the first round, ended with him being knocked out cold in the second, in his prime, all the way down at super flyweight, nine years ago. He did later capture the 115lb green belt on a subsequent attempt, followed by mixed success against domestic and international competition at higher weights - but has by and large not aged in the sport as gracefully as has González (although he may have originally had the better chin and some pretty decent pop of his own, if not in González's league). He is currently unrated in the WBC's (or any of their peer org's) top 40 at either super feather, or at 126lb where he most recently competed, retired on his stool after seven rounds against Edivaldo Ortega last October.
Thanks. I was a little surprised to see the result and had figured that either Jhonny had a) just had a really bad night at the office, b) finally had all the ring wear catch up with him and started looking his age, or c) encountered a disastrous stylistic matchup in Rojas. Watching this it seems to have been a little of all three but mostly C. Rojas was just a lot for him to deal with physically - between his being a southpaw and being the rare opponent that's actually taller & longer than Jhonny.
