Nearly set for March, at featherweight or possibly a catchweight. González, since he demolished Mares in under three minutes in 2013, has gone 4-2 (2) - making two additional defenses of the WBC featherweight title he reclaimed versus Mares before dropping it to Gary Russell Jr. on the other end of a demolition job. After that, González moved up to super feather for a fresh start but has thus far only defeated a pair of middling Japanese fighters in Kazushi Hashimoto and Hurricane Futa and lost a majority decision to Jonathan Oquendo. Mares, for his part, beat Oquendo by wide UD in his comeback eleven months after González stunned him, followed by his own trip up to super feather to retire José Ramírez and outpoint Arturo Reyes. He then dropped back down to 126, unsuccessfully challenging for Leo Santa Cruz's version of the WBA title. Rarely does a rematch make sense when the result was a KO1, but Mares was a heavy favorite and has beaten men to whom González has lost (Daniel Ponce de Leon and Oquendo) and this is a sensible match for both at the moment. :freddy
I see Gonzales by stoppage again. (Accidentally clicked by points). Although it might go a little longer than time though.
Mares whoops him up in the rematch. Johnny is severely declining worst than i thought before the first encounter , I also think the first fight was a bit of a fluke and Mares will prove it second time around.
hmm I think the exact opposite, as long as Jhonny can still punch Mares is hitting the canvass might take a few more rounds this time but that's it.
Hmmmm. Interesting. The last thing to go is power, but Johnny's reflexes have been gone for quite some time now and you need your reflexes otherwise youre as good as gone. Second time around will be what Mares needs to get back into the mix of serious contenders gunning for a title. Johnny's time is over, and he had a good run at it!
This was supposed to be an immediate rematch years ago but one of them got hurt. I'll be pulling for Mares but he probably won't win.
Mares is an old 30. Been in a lot of tough fights. Is too small for featherweight. His best days are behind him.
Also WTF happened to Mares' stamina. He was started out so good against Santa Cruz. I thought he was actually going to win. Then he just completely ran out of gas. It didn't take long for his tank to reach Empty.
