Nishioka destroys Gonzalez to retain WBC 122 pound title! By FightFan.com Staff (23-May-2009) Toshiaki Nishioka KO 3 Jhonny Gonzalez This content is protected WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka left Mexican Fight Fans in shock and awe with a devastating KO of the Year candidate stoppage over Jhonny Gonzalez moments ago in Monterrey, Mexico. Gonzalez started strong behind his long jab. His timing was spot on and he dropped a stunned Nishioka with 30 seconds remaining in Round 1 but the Japanese fighter got on his bike and survived the round. Nishioka recovered well and got his own jab cooking in Round 2 as an anxious Gonzalez looked in vain to follow up. In Round 3, Nishioka threw a blistering straight left hand behind a jab and caught Gonzales cold. He fell like a piece of timber straight back onto the ropes and laid motionless for a full count. The punch came suddenly and the Mexican crowd was as stunned as Gonzalez was. With the victory an elated Toshiaki Nishioka moved to 34-4 (21 KOs) and retained his WBC super bantamweight title. Nishioka now looks poised for a possible mega fight with Rafael Marquez later this year.
how many asians have lost their tittles to mex? Only reason asians keep winning is cause they stay in their country and they hold their tittle hostage. Props though I didnt know that KO was coming F...ing Johhny couldnt hold his own.
Yea I give props to Nashioka he really elevated the status of Asian fighters I just wish more of them would do the same thing but I guess its different since most of them get paid more in their own country like Chris John.
Jhonny Gonzalez never thought he was that good but most of the time these Jap title contenders get their asses kicked when they step it up to the world level. Surprising
Nishioka should have got himself a slot on HBO or Showtime next time out. As for Jhonny he can comeback but yet another setback........don't know.
yep. very surprising... especially that this happened in mexico. i guess mexican fans who watched this fight are in a state of shock now.
I seriously overestimated Gonzalez's ability to take a punch.:-( First good punch that Nishioka caught him with and it was lights out.
Maybe the war with Vasquez took its toll, but JG got caught pretty flush walking straight back. Maybe the Jap has decent power.
Didn't surprise me actually...I thought the Jap would come through. Jap boxing seems to be on the crest of a wave...even Hasegawa has been coming up with suprisingly early KO's!
