I've been a fan of Gonzalez for quite a few years now and I thought it was strange when he was fighting unheard of guys in Mexico. After the loss to Nishioka, he fought 6 of his next 7 opponents before Hasegawa in Mexico, and none of them were the calibre that he should have been fighting. He's always been an incredibly fun, knock out or be knocked out, type warrior. Despite his poor chin, he's never afraid of mixing it up and getting stuck in.

Against Hasegawa, he was behind on the cards and then he was able to stop his man. Against Vazquez, he was well ahead on the cards and then got stopped. That's what makes him such an exciting warrior. I watched the Mtagwa fight earlier today and absolutely anything could have happened in that one. Maybe Mtagwa could have landed a good punch and ended it early but instead, it was Gonzalez who managed to hurt his opponent first.

Despite being WBC Champion, I don't think he gets anything like the credit or recognition he deserves. He should have been in and out of world title fights for his entire career rather than fighting so many overmatched guys and wasting time.

Hopefully he can get the fights he deserves. He's a very entertaining fighter and deserves some big paydays on big cards.

Gonzales is "quietly" one of the more exciting fighters in the sport, always capable of producing a highlight reel stoppage or becoming one.

That was a great fight, I thought he'd go into a downward spiral after that and disapear, but he came back, then lost his title shot in another KO loss that could have sent him to oblivion, but came back again and is on a great run of Ko's, and against some good fighters too. He's a real fighter.

That was as lucky as it gets for Penaloser

He was getting beaten from pillar to pillar until he landed that lucky punch.

That's what I like about Gonzalez's fights, they're very unpredictable. There are fights that he's been winning before getting stopped out of the blue, and then there are fights where he's been getting beaten and turned it around himself.

    Very entertaining fighter.

Really? From pillar to post? You may want to check who's retreating from opening bell to the knockout time.

He looks good now. I remember after the Nishioka loss, people were saying he was finished, he couldn't take a shot anymore etc., but he's come back well and I'm sure Nacho is part of the reason why.

People always say **** like Mexicans can't box but Beristain is the best pure boxing trainer alive today, I think. Better than Roach, Steward and guys like him. Nobody teaches guys better skills than him and you can see it working for Gonzalez.

yup..he was bouncing in and out with his high guard, but still slugging it out from a distance..something johnny always had problems with while mixing it up "distance"

people that say mexicans can't box are ****en stupid....mexico has produced some of the purest boxers ever...when you speak of "technical boxing", nobody does it better than the mexican greats....most other athletes depend on athletecism, mexican almost always depend on pure skill, heart, and chin, mainly cause the majority dont have an athletic bone in their body......

DEFENSE DOES NOT = A GREAT BOXER, and just cause many other guys have great defenses, they act like mexicans have to have that same style of defense too in order to be considered "skilled fighters"....i call bull**** on that

The Beristain left uppercut to the head and body! A masterful piece of work!

Good post, I agree with your sentiments. I haven't watched the Vazquez fight, but plan on doing so.
