I know I already talked up Jean Pascal as being a shoe-in for 2019 Comeback of the Year if he defeated Badou Jack...and he technically did, albeit with a bit of controversy (I personally had it a draw, but either way he did escape with his belts solely by the skin of his teeth) - but I think upon reconsideration he might have stiff competition in the form of this Filipino journeyman. At the start of the year Ramonal had a 14-8-5 (7) record, and had only returned from a layoff of more than four years a few weeks earlier (drawing with unbeaten prospect countryman Jenel Villadar "The Demoltion Man" Lausa on November 30th of 2018). He was then fed to former world title challenger Ernesto "Chocolate" Saulong, and gave a good account of himself before a head clash forced an unsatisfactory ending with a technical draw. Next came a knockout victory over Danny "Boy Tirador" Olitres Tampipi, before his 2019 really kicked into high gear. A huge road upset over Shingo Wake at Korakuen Hall in October via TKO3 was followed by yet another successful invasion of Japan to knock out Yusaku Kuga in under ninety seconds - putting out the local fighter's lights with essentially just two flush right hands.

Spectacular run, and while neither Wake nor Kuga constitute a scalp on the level of a Badou Jack, nor even a Marcus Browne in p4p terms - we're still talking about somebody with an unimpressive journeyman's record and still more or less shaking off 4 years worth of rust achieving this. Expectations for a former world champ like Pascal - even faded as he doubtless is - ought to be and indeed are higher. Thus handicapped, with the victories weighted by proportion of where they stood heading into 2019, you have to view this Comeback of the Year race as very tight...neck & neck.

Erm... IB that's the first Wake fight, the second wasn't televised (that's a Fuji... Next broadcast iirc), was a boxing Raise show... ****ing brutal KO, genuine KO of the year contender

Great run though for the year, and he's now getting the Japanese killer tag from me

Whoops, so it was. Fixed now.

Damn, iced Wake out cold with the left and then Kuga with the right. Old boy's no 1-trick pony.

Ramonal is really bad for leading with his head. No wonder he has five technical decision draws. Otherwise not that bad a fighter and it seems he's always had the talent but luck and his chin didn't favour him in his initial stint at this career.
