i was reading champ in the corner last night a book about ray arcel and there is a bit in the book about lou nova and an excert of a fight report by a chap called eddie borden reporting for the ring lou nova came from the brink of fistic oblivion to score a sensational seven-round technical knockout victory over gunnar barlund in madison square garden...disdaining a count after being knocked down in the third round with a terrific right hand punch to the jaw,and obviously in a dazed condition, nova shook off the effects of the trip-hammer punch and fought himself out of trouble , by a continous drum-fire attack on the gunnar's body and head .the protege of ray carlin (nova's manager),bearing a striking resemblance to jim corbett in fighting style and stance so i was wondering has anybody heard this comparison before and your thoughts on the comparison. and would this make anyones view corbetts style as more modern than they had thought it. also on a side note i just found an old book called the art of boxing by jimmy wilde
Corbett had the rare ability to bend low, deliver a straight body shot, then get out of the way. He was also a pretty good combination fighter and in-fighter. Very good mobility and hand speed can be seen on film too.
