Prime Corbett versus the best versions of Charles Martin and Andy Ruiz Jnr? 1900's rules and gloves , and 20rds Do either of them have a chance of upsetting Gentleman Jim?
I think Corbett might be a little too quick for Martin. I could see him winning a points decision here in a fairly boring fight. But I could also see Martin catching him clean and knocking him out. Ruiz, on the other hand, has really fast hands and could cause Corbett a lot of problems. I think Ruiz wins this one, as the combination of size, power, and hand speed would be too much for Corbett to overcome. I just think the size difference makes things really tough for Corbett when comparing him to modern heavyweights. It’s probably more fair to compare him to modern day cruiserweights or even light heavyweights. Guys like Beterbiev actually weigh more on fight night than Gentleman Jim typically weighed.
From what I know of gentleman Jim, I'm going to say Ruiz and Martin stop him. Not the most pretty looking of fight s but Corbett loses both.
I'd easilly favor Corbett over either. I don't think either would do well with 20 rounds. I think Corbett could neutralise Ruiz's fast hands and exploit his slow feet. I don't think Martin is as awful as Joshua made him look, but he's not anything special, and I think Corbett would outbox him, and he'd really struggle over 20 rounds, his stamina is not the best.
Yeah, unless Ruiz completely disrespects Corbett's power I see him struggling a lot with his slow feet and bad conditioning.
This of course supposes that neither Martin or Ruiz is able to catch Corbett with something big and take him out.In which case the 20rds distance would become irrelevant.
Against Martin, Corbett would give away 4 inches in height, 7 inches in reach and 60 lbs in weight... so how on earth is he gonna get the better of a giant like that? Outpoint him from a distance? Or take the fight to the bigger man and pummel him on the inside?
Tommy Loughran beat Ray Impelletiere while giving away 8 inches in height, 11 inches in reach and 70 lbs in weight and he beat him three times. He gave away 10 inches in height, 9 inches in reach and 50 lbd against Campolo and he won. He lost to Carnera but was competitive. Loughran didn't have power, but he could outbox giants. Giants who were bigger than Martin and I don't think they were that much worse.
The difference is, that Loughran was a much better boxer than Corbett. I'm trying to envision how Corbett would beat Martin. He would obviously not try to turn it into a slugging match - but In the (sparse) film we have of him, he seems to be very light on his feet, and would no doubt use his superior footwork to stay out of harms way as much as possible. But to have any chance of winning on points, he can't do an O'Brien and just run all night, but would have to get into punching range every now and then. So would he stop and throw some weak arm-punches, with his chin in the air - like he did against Fitz? I dont see any way, this would end well for Corbett.
Impellettiere had 14 fights when he faced Loughran, and he had lost 5 of them.I hope this gives some context?
Bukkake asked how someone like Corbett could beat someone that much bigger. I just gave him two examples. Besides, let's not act like Martin is anything special.
No, of course not. And I would favour a lot of smaller fighters against Martin. Like Loughran, Charles, Tunney, Dempsey (of course!) for example. But Corbett... I don't think so!
