As Corbett is getting some attention,I thought I'd match him against these guys.Everyone prime 1950's rule-set,and gloves. Corbett has a year to acclimatise himself to the different game. How does he do?
I haven’t watched much of anyone here but Ellis. I think they’d be about the same size too. I don’t know who would win - but before anyone suggests Corbett can’t box (as always happens in these threads) I’m going to ask for there credentials and compare it to the opinions of men like Tommy Loughran and Gene Tunney. He was the best heavyweight boxer of an era can any of these fighters say such a thing?
Corbett's record is; James J Corbett 11- 4- 3 He never fought good black boxers of his era such as Armstrong and Martin, and could not get the better of crude Sharkey in 2 tries. I'd say the competition in the eras of the opponents I named was deeper, would you not agree? Big fish in a little mostly [1 exception,]white pond. What were Corbett's best wins? Loughran and Tunney were like Corbett, Irish Americans stylish boxers and, with one exception on Corbett's part, [Jackson,]none fought black fighters.I think they would naturally be sympatico to Corbett, don't you?
You don’t believe when he’d defeated Sullivan for the title he was the best HW boxer around for even a small window?
I’d say Corbett was probably the best HW in the world for like a year or 2. Jackson was better but by 1895 reports say that he began drinking heavily and was around 33 years old. So between 1895 and his loss to Fitzsimmons, Corbett was king.
