Corbett v Bonavena 15 rds 1950's rules Corbett 6'1" 184lbs 11-4-3 Bonavena 5'10 1/2" 202lbs 58-9-1 Who? Why?
Bonavena by TKO late or wide UD! Corbett is durable but yet too old school and was himself a pioner of boxing! He was good outboxer but very poor skills even for 1920s but for 1960s? He was not Ellis or Ali...if he plays smart but that's big "if" then maybe he could pull UD but knowing he is not Ellis or Patterson he wouldn't! I am sure Bonavena would win this by mid-late tko or maybe even KO! Bonavena himself would be the hardest puncher Corbett faced except Jeffires because Bonavena and Jeffries are cut from same clothes...both are big, bulky, bulls, durable amd stron while Jeffries is as strong as Bonavena but was just left hooker while Bonavena could do it with both hands! I pick Bonavena to do it earlier than Jeffries did!
Probably Corbett by decision, because Bonavena struggled with movers. That said, I'm high on Oscar so he could stop Corbett late.
Despite several attacks on Corbetts record, particularly the lack of size in it, and his inexperience, corbett was definitely a higher classed fighter than Bonavena, (assuming there is no insurmountable time generation gap which makes comparing the two eras impossible.). Corbett may very well have been the best physically attributed fighter ever in terms of speed, fitness and general athletic power. In fact in terms of actual strength (as opposed to ko power) he may have even been first class for a fighter of his admmittedly smaller size. It is interesting that he is actually quite a bit taller than Bonavena. I think that you need to consider his speed of hand and foot to be in the class of a young Ali. And while his lean back defence, and (and low, even telegraphed hands) from the little film available is unconventional, it is nowhere near as far from an Ali style as people suggest. i do think that the ali Bonavena fight needs to be considered. Patterson Bonavena is another where his speed is something like Bonavena faced. I also think the way an old Jim Corbett made Jeffries struggle for so long is another which all suggest that Corbett should win this one. That being said, do not forget that if your using the ali fight as a guide, While Corbetts speed and style maybe comparable, he didnt have the chin, he didnt have the heart, the improvisation or probably even the same punch. He also almost certainly telegraphed his punches quite a bit more, so he wouldnt be able to dominate Oscar as well. I back Corbett on points with quite a bit of certainty, but it could easily go the other way. In a finish fight, where a prime Oscar steps in for John L Sullivan, it would be a very close affair and Oscar might actually be slightly favoured despite being less experienced. Certainly i would consider this his best bet to get the win.
If you want to match them under 1930 rules or any other rules, create your own thread. You are notorious for trying to alter the criteria of others threads which is why you've been thrown out of Rumsfeld's It ain't happening here! In fact I'd be pleased if you didn't try and contribute at all, because you know Jack **** and only succeed in disrupting things.
Corbett was not a higher-class fighter than Bonavena. See round one of Corbett-Fitz. Corbett looks like a guy trying to avoid a dodgeball. (LOL) Fitz isn't even advancing very aggressively, and Corbett is missing wildly and running for his life. If someone got in the ring today with 11 wins in 18 fights and fought like that, would you consider him an all-time great? Hell, you'd wonder how he got 11 wins. In no way shape or form does he fight like a young Ali. Ali could actually slip a shot and throw a punch immediately after. Corbett can't punch and move at the same time. He "RAN." Then he'd stop and telegraph his punches. He was TERRIBLE. Seriously, everyone who is trying to hype Corbett, open your goddamn eyes! This content is protected
