I was majorly impressed with this guys performance against Nam Phan. He ragdolled Nam like a child and his GnP was vicious as hell, I was amazed how accurate his ground strikes were. He was also throwing submission attempts om at will, despite Nam being a high level black belt. The only criticism I could throw at him is that his striking on the feet looked sloppy in the second and third round, but that can be improved on easily enough. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Hettes is a future champion at Feather, he's only 24 and if he keeps improving I can see him being a beast.
He impressed the hell out of me. That was the best GnP I've seen in ages, most guys just throw little pitter pat punches but he was landing hard, accurate ones. I was surprised how well he was able to control Nam Phan as well. Phan is a BB isn't he?
Hettes is outstanding ive been saying it for close to 2 years now. I seen him in person early last year fight one of my mentors Binky Jones. Binky is a Blackbelt under John Rallo who is a BB under Renzo Gracie. When they fought it was shocking, Hettes got a takedown and won by RNC in about 25 secounds maybe even less there should be video on youtube somewhere. This guy some of the best Jiujitsu in the divison IMO.
Never heard of him before that fight. He looked outstanding. A real force. And Nam Phan is a big guy.
Hettes impressed the **** out of me, I'd never heard of him before last night. I'm a Nam Phan fan, I like the way he fights, and this guy absolutely destroyed him, I can't remember the last time I heard scores like that read out.
Great to see someone use Judo again been along time since someone used it effectively add to that he had a great all round game to. Who would you all put him in with now?
Raphael Assuncao, Pablo Garza, or Josh Grispi would be viable opponents and stiff tests. Phan was a pretty big step up from a super green Cacares, and judging by his performance last night, he is ready for some legit opponents, despite his relative inexperience.
The only thing that I see that could hold him back is the way he leaves his chin up in the air. Someone with good hand speed, like Guillard or Yves Edwards, could really make him learn this the hard way. That is if they can do it before he closes the distance.
Good point. But he's just a kid, if he's smart and/or if the people around him are smart, he will improve his standup without having to learn it the hard way. I was speechless during that fight. That was some beatdown, the 30-25 x2 scores were accurate, rounds 1 and 3 were the definition of a 10-8 round. Extremely talented kid. That said, I think this fight proved that martial arts' belts don't always count that much. I mean, we saw a purple belt absolutely dominate a black belt. That tells me that Phan's black belt doesn't say all that much, and this should apply to other 'black belts' too.
I ended watching some of his other fights. That kid's grappling is effin sick. I can't wait to see how he handles the upper level guys in the future.
