Jim Jacobs vs Archie Moore

Cus D'amato wanted to train Jim Jacobs to fight Archie Moore. I believe the training did commence but Jacobs decided not to go through with it. What if Jim Jacobs had got top notch sparring, lots of bag and road work, a thousand rounds of shadow boxing and pad work and a good restful night sleep every night until fight night, could he have upset the old Mongoose. Perhaps Jim Jacobs becomes the Jake Paul of his era.

 

Buddy, Moore would murder him.

 

And people complain that I matched Manny Pacquiao against Roberto Duran.

 

Or all the training pays off and Jacobs pull a Marciano on Moore

 

That's like saying a badminton player walks into Wild Card Gym and asks Freddie Roach to train him to box Terrence Crawford.

Writer George Plimpton boxed a few rounds with Archie - of course Moore didn’t go balls to the wall but George didn’t come out of it too pretty.

If it had come off Jim could’ve narrated his own downfall, employing his best superlatives, in his Greatest Fights of the Century series.

 

How good could Cus have gotten Jimmy Jacobs?

 

The best thing Cus could do is give him good sparring his system of fighting would get him hurt worse then he’d already cop…

 

I guess Cus might’ve gotten Jacobs to be the best that he could be relative to the time allowed but it’s impossible to even speculate how good that might’ve been.

I would say, even at best estimate for Jacobs, Archie would make short work of Jimmy.

Perhaps part of our answer, or the full answer, is in the fact that Jacobs didn’t follow through on it - I don’t know the reason why he didn’t otherwise.

Jacobs certainly had the athleticism - he was a highly-rated handball player, and looked in good shape - but from all I can tell from photos/videos he's a middleweight at best; not enough size or experience to deal with the Mongoose.
