This match up has me torn, Schmelling beat Louis and Sharkey, both big punchers, great pressure but against the biggest strongest fighter he faced in Baer he got broke down

Schmelling was certainly the better faster boxer. Schmellings fast counter right would land all night. I wouldn't discount this eventually stopping Jeffries as he would be open to it.

I think Jack Johnson was similar to Schmelling and despite Jeffries being past his prime he didnt have the skill to compete with Johnson and this would seemingly be the case against Schmelling.

My pick is Schmelling but Jeffries may just withstand and gradually break Schmelling down if he can impose his size

More importantly for me was the way he landed those punches. So accurate and so well timed, 1 of the best ever in the aspect of right counters, like Toney/Walcott/Ali he times and lands them so quickly and so cleanly without getting hit

He completely destroyed Louis in a brutal beating, the sort of beating you wouldnt expect a man to recover from

Though Sharkey hit harder than his 13 kos in 53 fights suggests ,I wouldnt class him as a big puncher,Schmeling was a hard hitter a methodical puncher who punished you without taking much in return ,Jeffries would take a lot of punishment in this fight ,against a man nearer his own size and age than in his victories over Fitz and Corbett.Close either way imo.

Jeffries style was not to go for the early Ko. Besides, he was fighting Hall of fame fighters with little experience. Or does that only count when you want it to?

No. I think there is going to be a KO. Foreman could not go a hard 15, let alone 25. I would pick Foreman to win, and he would need to do it before he gassed.

Maybe. Liston carried plenty of people the distance where were not as good as Fitz. Look it up kiddo. Also, I’d lean towards a 40 year old Fitz over a 40 year old Liston who was nearly knocked dead by Martin.

    On Tyson's 5th pro fight?

One of the most un-informed things you have ever said. Jeffries moved Sharkey around like a rag doll. One time Sharkey charged in and Jeffires picked him up several feet off the ground then left him down not so gently. Jeffries is known as one of the strongest and best clinch fighters of all time.

And by the way, Billy Conn was 168 pounds or so vs Joe Louis. He had Louis staggered and behind on points. If the fight had been 12 round, we a new champ. Since Joe Louis your #1 heavy, then I guess its ok for Jeffries to have a rough go with a hall of fame fighter in his 5th fight or so. Ya think?

But of course, the entire board knows about your double standards, which is why you are not taken seriously when you play these types of games. As I said before if you grow up a bit and think fairly, I'll respect you more.

Speak for yourself Z or Mendoza(?), many posters here have called you out on your Double Standards. Your 40 years old, you do not act like the other older posters here.

I am nearly 21 years old, College student, NCAA College Athlete, Varsity wrestler,Academic All American, Rookie Amatuer Boxer at Cappiello Brothers Boxing Gym in Brockton, criminal justice major......I think I am growing up just fine but thank you for the concern Doctor......perhaps you should rethink your thoughts about how your own life is going. I don't need to be respected by a guy like you, and frankly I don't care what you think.

most posters here consider you very bias, and you are a full grown adult.......so perhaps you should be worried.

Sharkey was many inches shorter, and around 40lb lighter, yet he gave jeffries fits nearly winning the first fight and taking jeffries the limit in the 2nd fight and dishing out damage.

Ya and Jeffries sprinted with a polar bear on his back 9 straight miles right?

Film does not jeffries picking sharkey up at all, in fact film shows very little about either fighters greatness

This is your opinon, I disagree with it. I think Jeffries had a lot of strength, but did not have functional boxing strength, he struggled with men much much smaller than he. I do not think jeffries had the same functional manhandiling strength on film that marciano, foreman, liston showed in the ring.

M ,you write some excellent posts on other subjects but get on Jeffries and you go into worship mode, other posters give Schmeling a real chance in this fight because as a heavy he was only kod by dynamite punchers Louis and Baer, something Jeffries wasnt,Jeffries fought Sharkey ,a man at 5 8 6 inches smaller and 33 lbs lighter Sharkey gave Jeffries life and death for 45 rds.Sharkey met Fitz twice and was kod both times though the referee awarded a nonexistant foul victory in the first ,Sharkey was 23 .Sharkey was kod by Ruhlin twice in 15 rds and 11 ,he was 29 .not an old veteran .This suggest that Jeffries didnt have the power of the two men that kod Schmeling at heavyweight.Schmeling was around 200 lbs and prime for prime would be equal to Jeffries in age and nearly in size, plus Max was good defensively, hit very hard,so Jeffries would be experiencing something new a man near his own size ,who was a ko puncher.Over 20 rds Jeffries might wear down the German ,but he would ship a lot of punishment and it's possible,he could be tko'd or decisioned. The much lighter ,older Fitz ruined Jeffries face ,why couldnt Schmeling?

Thanks. I think we can ignore our resident double standard from here on in. Have you ever seen Jeffries hit the heavy bag? I have, and he makes a bigger dent and moves it more than Louis or Dempsey does when they hit the bag on film. Louis wore better " punchers " gloves. It is hard to say who hit harder. Sometimes Louis needed to land many shots to get the ko. Sometimes Jeffries only needed one or two goods one. And some of Jeffires KO's were 10 counts where the other guys didn't get up for a while without assistance or suffered injury.

Schemling was Ko'd by some non-dynamite punchers. He did not have a top chin period.

I have seen Schemling on film a few times. Schmeling defense was slightly average, not great. His footwork was maybe just a bit above average too. It was Schemling's jab, cross and counter punch that kept him safe, not his blocking, slipping, ducking and rather poor clinching ability.

Jeffries most certainaly ruined Sharkey in the second fight. The papers will say it is not the same Sharkey. This is a reason why Ruhlin was able to beat him. The prime Sharkey was much tougher than Schmeling was by a mile.

Fitz likely loaded his gloves for the 2nd Jeffires match and hit harder then Schemling did. If anything, this fight makes one think Schemling's punchers chance for a TKO is minimal. It also proves Jeffres coudl up the ante and press the action when he wanted too.

I put no credence into bag work ,its the reaction of boxers when they are hit that does it for me,Jeffries was no doubt very strong and I give him the benefit of the doubt regarding his durability,Im prepared to beleive he had a top chin, but he didnt have top power, imo ,not in the Louis,Baer,Dempsey ,Marciano,Liston, Foreman class, and he would possibly need it to get Schmeling out of there,as only two men did it at Heavy. When I said Schmeling could tko Jeffries I meant with facial damage not drop him and have him wobbly for a ref's intervention. Is the fight to be held under older conditions? I. E .With the ref letting the fight go on longer? This might favour Jeffries as under modern rules he might be stopped due to facial damage.I have seen what footage of Jeffries is available.I don't understand your double standard comment,Ive tried to be objective ,and actually I would pick Jeffries to win here, but not with any certainty.

Leaving a dent in the heavy bag means nothing, I've seen heavybags literally ripped to shreds, I tell them 'get a bigger, heavier, denser, durable bag', heavybag damage is stictly hype

Jeffries wasn't a big puncher, a puncher would destroy the smaller Choynski and 40yo MW Fritz. Those 2 wouldn't go past 3 against Louis, Dempsey, Tyson, Foreman

Louis far much bigger opposition and much more durable men than jeffries did. Jeffries took on supermiddleweights. What one punch Kayo does jeffries have that is equivalent to Joe Louis sending paulino uzcudens teeth into the stands for uzcudens only knockout loss of his career, uzcuden was 205lb. Louis lifted 235lb tony galento off his feet with one left hook in the 2nd round. Louis had one punch power like no other.

I question jeffries power, he took many rounds to dispose of supermiddleweights/lightheavyweights

Wheres the evidence on film? I dont see it

Sharkey was Kayoed by Ruhlin, who I have on film getting toyed with by denver ed martin. Schmeling was miles above sharkey in the skill department. Jeffries never fought no first class counterpuncher before like he will deal with in schmeling. Jeffries will be befuddled with schmelings style. Jeffries was too cautious to overwhelm schmeling.

Dude, your 40 years old and you don't have anywhere near the boxing knowledge of the other older posters here. You probably never set foot in a gym in your life. You have the biasness of a 15 year old kid. If I were you I would be worried mate just about how your life is panning out.

Anyone doubting Louis's power should check out his clinical finish of Braddock, and his smashing of the huge Buddy Baer ,who turns a piruet before falling,Joe lifts the 2333/4 Galento ,[a man who had never been down] off his feet ,in an early Foreman Frazier preview.Louis was probably the most efficiently ,correct puncher the game has seen.Braddock said Louis drove his teeth through his mouth piece and right through his lip,and put 23 stitches in his face.Braddock gave this information out in a taped interview in 1972 at his home.
